Sanitation hose- brainstorming---

Just an idea to bounce around, reread that OK. I am just starting to get a slight odor in the boat and assume the sanitation hoses are begining to permeate. I like the idea of minimizing the hose by using PVC for some of the line from the head to waste tank. Mine has a longggg sanitaion hose. I'm not able/interested in moving the waste tank, so rule that out. I am planning on leaving a couple of feet of sanitation hose at each end for good flexibility and running the rest in PVC.
Upon examining just how many hoses there are the system I am thinking the hoses that would likely permeate the fastest due to having waste sit in them whenever there is waste in the tank are the short hoses from the tank to macerator an tank to pumpout deck fitting. They are too short to use any PVC lengths. I am wondering if any has ever tried wrapping those short runs with something like heat shrink to block odor? I would be interested to hear if anyone has any opinions/ideas. What do you think?? Good idea, don't waste your time or have a better idea??

practical sailor just had a good article on hoses.

pvc (sched 40) is ok for long runs. (with hose connectors at the ends).

anything not for sanitation will stink in short time...

If you're gonna wrap it with anything, try saran wrap. How would you ever get heat shrink around the hose without removing it?

The standard search method...

... is to wipe all surfaces with a warm rag and sniff the rag. Sometimes it makes sense to wash everything and then wait for the small to come back.

* could be small leaks anywhere
* could be the tank
* could be the hose
* could be mess in the bathroom
* could be saltwater sitting in the bowl
* could be bilge water
* could be the vent
* could be sewer gas pushing back from the holding tank (blocked vent)
* could be several of these

Forget wrapping the hose. A few feet of good hose (see article) will solve the problem.

what kind of vents do you have? PS stated some mfgs used clear hose for venting. (bad).

Very bad, since they are also very prone to kinking in the bends.

I've had Trident 101 for five years now. No stink. Nothing. I know all hoses are supposed to permeate (after 30 years owning heads, oh do I know :bang: ). But I've also never run into someone who's said their Trident 101/102 started to stink.

Am I just lucky? Have the wrong friends? Anyone?

I read somewhere several years ago that wrapping hoses with the metalic tape used for HVAC duct work would permanently block any permeation. I put new hoses on a Beneteau that I had at that time. Prior to installing them, I wrapped all new hoses with the tape. It was inexpensive and relatively easy. Not sure how permanent the fix was because I sold the boat a few years after my repair. No oders in those few years though.

Hhmmm... I wonder if that fairly new spray-on sealer (for downspouts and whatever) would be good. There is a liquid plastic spray if you really feel the need. I wouldn't do it, but it might help?

I am planning on leaving a couple of feet of sanitation hose at each end for good flexibility and running the rest in PVC.

Last year I had a non-functional marine head system in my new (to me) boat. I replaced the head with a new Jabsco, the sanitation line and the fresh water line. The tank vent line and tank dump line were fine.

"Flexible" does not come into play with modern sanitation lines. The line I bought was expensive, like $80 for a 6 foot section, white, very heavy duty, and almost like PVC pipe. It was difficult to work with, running it through bulkheads, getting it to turn even slightly, and the only way to get it on to the fittings was to soak it for 30-45 seconds in boiling water, then quickly slide it on the fittings. As it cooled, you could hear it getting tight again. I'm not even sure the hose clamps are necessary...or even doing anything!

The results have been fantastic.....zero odors from the system at all. No leaks whatsoever....easy, efficient flushing. The only place I get odors is from the head compartment itself, and that is just a matter of keeping the head itself clean. I insist that males sit down to urinate. It's the splashing, and it happens no matter how careful, of urine to the surrounding areas that causes odor in my head. But properly cleaned and procedures followed, there are no head odors in my boat and my marine sanitation system works perfectly.

In googling heat shrink it appears to be made of polyolefins which has the following properties-----"In addition, it is highly rated for aroma retention, and odor ... makes it possible to co-extrude with not only polyolefins but nylon 6, nylon 66, .... Odor Proof".
Maybe it would be a reasonable premanent solution to block odor??...

I am in the process of redoing the head with new hose, I am using the good white sani hose. Those barbed hose fittings, what a pain in the ass. I gave up trying to get that rigid sani hose 1.5" on a fitting, and if you did, its not coming off. I called Rich, from Ronco tanks, he made the tank, he gave me a tip, grind off the barbs with a sharpening wheel. much better. I initially started in feb, and gave up, that hose in cold was even worse, even wf a heat gun....Red

I did the same thing on some old smelly hoses. I just wanted a quick short term fix, but it completely solved my oder problems.

Trident 101 is the only way to go for sanitation hose. Far superior to anything else. Works great.

"Fairly new" you mean newly marketed spray undercoating sold on an infomercial for 4X the cost of under coating sold at PepBoys... Gotta give the guy credit for coming up with a new use for an old product..... Just wish I'd done it....

Are you sure you're not trying to use PVC barbs/male adapters? 1.5" PVC male adapters are NOT 1.5" you need sanitation male adapters and the hose will fit fine.. Grinding off the barbs often leads to leaks...

Which "white" hose are you using? If it is the PVC stuff throw it in the dumpster now, or just buy some fart smell candles so you'll be used to it by the time it permeates in 12 months.........

There are some white hoses that are good quality like white Trident 101, Vetus or Raritan Sani-Flex but the PVC stuff is pure garbage and not worth a dime per foot let alone the $6.00 a foot they try and get for it...
