I single-hand my 1977 Catlaina 30 frequently. I would like to convert my Lewmar 25 winches to self-teailing if possible, or replace them with ST winches. Has anyone modified the Lewmar 25 to add the ST rings? If not I would appreciate suggestions for a replacement winch for the Lewmar 25. I was hoping to avoid minimizing the deck work to find a winch whose footprint comes close to the Lewmar 30. Much appreciate any suggestions for this as well as pros and cons for doing it.

You could try those plastic self tailing converison rings-check out WM or defender-though the one person I know who tried them was not particulrlay happy with their performance-you may have better luck, may be worth a try given their relatively low cost. But check out the Lewmar.com web site-it has detaled specs including cad drawings of their winches so perhaps you can find a close fit. A new ST winch would be a good upgrade.

I may be the only skipper around who praises Winchers. I used them for over 10 years on our C25 and was extremely pleased with them. I sailed often, and mostly singlehanded, too.

If you do a search on Winchers you can read a lot more.

Adding self-tailers is one of the best (and expensive) improvements you can make. I replaced non-ST Lewmar 40's with ST's same two speed model. It's like having a crew on board. I checked on coversions to non-selftailers and they are not possible on Lewmars at least

Good luck,

Jim

Did Catalina put 25's on the C-30? Anyway, if you're considering replacement, go with ST 40's. They fit just fine on our '84. This weekend, Defender is having their annual warehouse sale. Lewmars are discounted nicely, plus they're adding their new one-touch winch handles with each winch you buy.

Another possibility that would just take a phone call, is to contact Catalina in Florida. It's been said they have a TON of inventory they're trying to sell.

This has been very helpful. This is the first time I've used the Catalina 30 forums (as you can appreciate from all my spelling mistakes) and the feedback is terrific. I'll do some more research and go from there. Thanks to all of you for your guidance and suggestions.
