Give Rudy Nickerson a call and he'll set you up with a centerboard pendant line with the pendant line shackle spliced on one end.

I'm confused about the model of your boat. Is your boat an O'Day Mariner an O'Day 19, or an O'Day 192? On the "I love O'Days" web site, they don't have the 19 Weedender listed.

Rudy bought all the O'Day boat molds and parts, after the O'Day factory closed up and went out of business.
Back around the mid 1990s, Rudy had a boat builder in Bristol RI build some O'Day 192s and he named them "The Weekender." He only had about a half dozen built and they all got sold. Four of them went to Japan, and my friend and fellow YC member, Alden, bought one of them off Rudy back then.

The O'Day 192s, and the 222s were what is known as keel/centerboard sloops. Does your boat look like the one on this site?

I'm just curious, but at any rate, Rudy can get you what you need.

I have a 19 weekender and just replaced the pendant with one of Rudy's nice lines that is spliced to a shackle. It worked well but when I removed the board to clean the well/check the pin hinging the board, I saw that my pendant was the "old style" where the pendant line was inserted into a hole drilled directly into the trailing edge of the board. On the side of the board was some filler that I pulled out of a one inch diameter cup drilled half way through the board. The pendant end was knotted and embedded into the board.I bought The Line with the shackle so I used it but could have just as well used just a plain old line without the shackle.Would have saved a few bucks and I liked the simplicity of the original setup.By the way the pin that I replaced was in fine shape but I figured it wouldn't hurt. You may want to drop the board to see which configuration yours is.Cheers, Barry

Barry,
Your centerboard is set up exactly like my kick up rudder. The line enters a 1/4" hole in the trailing edge and is knotted in a 1" hole through the side with a plastic cover over it.
Both my centerboard and Peter's centerboard has a hole for a shackle on the end of the pendant line.
I just found out what the O'Day 19 Weekender looked like. I've never heard of it referred to as the "Weekender." On the "I love O'Days" web site, they just refer to it as the O'Day 19 and that's what threw me off.

Yes Joe,Our weekenders are the model that preceded the 192.Maybe '79 to '85.They have a little less cabin but a little more cockpit.Sounds like, if you just call it a 19, people think you have a Rhodes.
Did you put that rudder lift line in yourself?I was thinking of installing one on mine.Sounds useful for launching and such.

It sure looks like a nice little boat to me for trailer-sailing. These O'Days have strong thick hull that can take a roller trailer and be launched just as easy as a powerboat.

Yes. That rudder hold-up pendant line was a "brain child that I came up with many years ago.
If you do a lot of trailering, it's a whole lot easier to mount the rudder with the blade raised, and tie off the tiller to center the rudder, and back the boat down the ramp. Raise the rudder blade and center it when you pull the boat up the ramp as well.
My tiller came off an O'Day 25. My boat is kind of a mongrel. :D

If your rudder blade was manufactured by Foss Foam in FL., they advise not to store it in a hot trunk of a car or paint it a black color. Heat can have an adverse effect on the foam so they say.

I used a fare lead clam cleat on top of my tiller plus a bronze or brass fare lead on top of the rudder head for the hold up pendant line.

Again Joe,Thanks for the great pictures.Looks like another "must have" for me as I will be moving this boat around a bit.I like your neat little splice around the rudder.Must learn some ropework besides the ol' bowline.

Actually, that's not a splice. It's a seizing and it's very simple to do. I didn't want to splice it to the rudder blade because I wanted to be able to remove it when I had to paint it and it's a lot smarter to just cut the splicing twine than to cut the rope each time I needed to remove it. I didn't want to splice a thimble on this line for a shackle either, because I was afraid that the shackle would wear out the hole and making it larger.

If you plan on adding a pendant line to your blade to hold it up, it might be a good idea for you to drill a larger hole than needed, in the area where you want to attach the pendant line. Then fill the hole with epoxy with filler mixed in. After it's set up, drill a hole into the center of the epoxy filled hole to the diameter of the line. This way, water will never get into the blade and cause it to freeze and split during the winter months.
These rudder blades are noted for splitting at the seams and eventually breaking. I have a solid rudder blade that I bought off Rudy many years ago and I keep it stored down my cellar during the winter months.

Thanks Joe,It looks like your hole is drilled about 8" down the trailing edge.Is that about right?Barry

Actually the hole is 10.5" down from the bottom edge of the Aluminum rudder head at the trailing edge.
Most of the time I have to give the blade a nudge with my boat hook or my kayak paddle to get it to pop up when the boat is in the water.

You could experiment with the placement of the hole by just tying a large clove hitch with a half hitch on it, around the rudder blade and just move it up or down to different positions as you try to find the best place to bore the hole. This is probably something that I should have done but didn't think of it at the time. Maybe mine would work better if it was lower. I just don't know.
