Hope this generates some debate.
My 2 hp BD2 Honda 2004 outboard went bang accompanied by blue smoke, two weeks ago. The cost of fixing is more than its worth so I bit the bullet and went electric with a Torqeedo 1003. Dingy is an inflatable 2.7 m Achilles also circe 2004.
Why would you pay an extra grand I hear you all say!
1. No noise - no longer just getting to the shore as quickly as possible in the noisy beast but enjoy a quiet cruise en route.
2. No more tugging at the string and sometimes hitting someone in the face,or having a missfire and dislocating a finger - just turn on a switch
3. No more carrying petrol on board and finding the can empty just when you need it or running the danger ofself immolation - just plug into the solar charged battery bank when you have finished for the day. (400 ah available)
4. No more limited range of one hour from the Honda tank. Will go for six hours beween charges, ample for a tender.
5. No more bad language when it doesn't start
6. No more service costs - the last and only annual service cost me $200 or 25% of the price of the unit. - When did an electric motor on anything last give you a problem?
7. Maximum torque at zero revs the magic chacteristic of electric motors.
Got to be worth a grand over say ten years!
