I have just finished glassing in a new cockpit sole, the old diesel fill and pedestal mount allowed the entire core to rot to hell. So the diesel fill will be moved to a better spot and the pedestal will be raised about 3/4" (slightly more after the glass layup) The pad is the same as the core, "coosa" a fiberglass reinforced foam, and oversized 1" all around the pedestal base. I am taking tomm. off work and glassing this pad down and fairing the surrounding layup. However I can't remember exactly where the pedestal was mounted. Obviously centered athwartship but can't remember how far fore/aft. If you have any pictures or thought on the matter please chime in.

Where are the cables? You might be able to determine the correct location from a measurement of where they turn up after coming off of the radial wheel/quandrant. In your pictures your pad looks too far forward to me.

I had new cables nico-pressed onto the chain and had them leave the ends long so i could cut to length on the install. So unfortunately I can't backtrack the location that way. The location shown was just a guestimate, maybe some body has a measurement of the wheel to the helm seat, I could extrapolate from there. I have a habit of shooting myself in the foot like this haha

The sopt you show is pretty much it. Being as you now have a golden opportunity, I would set the pedestal in place, stand and sit behind it to get the absolute best, most comfortable position for it. Nothing is written which says a pedestal HAS to be at "X" spot. I have often considered moving mine forward to just behind the bridge deck, much the same as the old Pearson 35's.

Remember you want knee clearance around the wheel for people moving forward past it. This is one thing a lot of newer production boats with oversized wheels have overlooked. And, as much as I like Lewmar, I do not like the folding gate wheel. I just don't trust it in the worst of conditions. It make be strong enough but with so many moving parts something is bound to be more vulnerable than with a solid wheel. And then there is the cost!

If you're reusing your old wheel, mount it to the pedestal and stand the whole thing in place. If you're getting a new one, seek the middle ground-- not some little 18-24" wheel and not so big as 44" or so. We had a really nice 40" wheel on our Raider when the spec was for 36". Moreover we had it geared like a tiller or F-1 car in that one quick move put the rudder half over. It was like 2-1/2 turns lock-to-lock, which was great for weird fluky weather racing on the river.

Hank Keene at Edson will be a good one to phone to ask if you have questions, especially about the rigging under the sole. (Tell him I sent you.)

Remember you're going to need a major backing plate-- as big in diameter as you dare to make it-- and remember to epoxy-treat all the holes before installing the bolts. Most cockpit soles rot out because the pedestal works back and forth from use and the bedding dries out-- and then it will rot out again when the next guy uses the wrong stuff. This should be
only 5200.

Just one more reason I am happy to have a tiller-- my ancient cockpit sole is still pristine.

Good call on assembling the whole unit and "trying it out", I was impatient to let the paint cure but its worth getting this right. I went ahead and did the layup on the top of the pad, 5 layers alternating between roving and mat saturated with west, maybe overkill but I'm imagining buddies who havnt grown sea-legs putting all their weight on it after a few rums. It ended up over 1/4" thick. I will then trim the edge and bond it to the deck and fillet the edge. What kind of backing plate? Originally it had the 12" plate with the sheaves mounted to it, should I make a plate to go above this one? Stainless or would epoxy coated ply work alright?

Red I thought about moving it forward but then I could not walk by the wheel, so I decided not to bother it. If you find a better location please let me know.

This is an awesome picture you have drawn!
Love the perfection of it!
But id does serve the purpose, and even though it was not sent to me, I still appreciate your artistic flair, and your promptness in responding
In case this is not clear, it is meant as a compliment...

sometimes the most simplistic drawing is all that is needed to get everyone on the same page, it is always easier then trying to describe which side you are giving a measurement for, we do it all the time on the job homeowners sometimes give us puzzled looks when we draw them out their options for trim profiles on their new drywall as if it was a chalk board.....Great illustration for this purpose, besides were sailors not painters right? haha

I have yet too lose a piece of drywall chalkboard that is screwed in place! Of course it does get to be a bit hard to read after the paint goes on.

NEVER use chopped mat with epoxy. The binders won't disolve in epoxy, only polyester and vinylester.

shit, i had never heard that. It was leftover from the main sole layup which i used vinyl ester on. What are the implications? possible Delamination?
