Just had a fire today on my 1991 Hunter 30. Started in the engine compartment the positive wire coming from the battery rubbed on the motor mount and arced setting the wire insolation on fire then caught the noise insolation around the engine compartment on fire. CHECK your positive wire and the motor mount in the back right corner. Should be behind the panel accessed from the head. It was exciting fighting fires and sailing at the same time. First sail for the year a was motor sailing let the engine run for awhile.

Huge amounts have been written on this site about electrical protection. Mainsail and others have created a repository of information that everyone should take advantage of.

Nope, this is what FUSES ARE FOR!!!!!!
But, now that the boat is burned yes he'll need the insurance. He will pay the deductible if hopefully they don't deem this "lack of proper maintenance" and try to deny coverage.
I will preach this once more in the hopes that more folks don't suffer their boats burning up.......

Thanks for the information. I will fuse the batteries after I rewire the engine. Did not lose the boat. About the only damage other then the engine box being scorched and melted wire insolation. Is two inches of scorching in the head above the engine access panel.
