Small Rust Spots On The Toerail

I had a metal "U" bolt (unknown material) temporarily attached to a stanchion last season. I removed it when I noticed many small rust spots on the toerail and the fiberglass deck directly below it. They're just little specs of rust, like someone sprinkled them on the toerail.

What is the best way to remove them and clean it up? Is there a solution I can use or should I lightly sand the area? Any suggestions are appreciated.

FSR, it's a gel oxalytic acid. On & Off does it too, but I've found it to be way too strong.

You might try Fiberglass Stain Remover (FSR). It works for rust and exhaust stains. Active ingredient is oxalic acid so wear gloves and eye protection.

The cause of these small spots is often the result of someone sawing or filing steel in the vicinity. The filings themselves are almost invisible on a light deck - but when they rust boy aren't they noticeable then.
Did you saw off the ends of the 'U' bolt or something it was attached to?

On / Off = Gone

I had some On/Off aboard and tried that. Dipped a rag in it and wiped down the area. Let it sit a minute and scrubbed with a hand held brush. All gone!!

Try Star-bright Rust Stain Remover from West Marine or purchase on-line for ~$15 works great. You can also use Spotless Stainless and costs ~$20 for a quart plus shipping. I have used both and both work.
