My neighbour, just asked me if i could change the impeller, on his 4 year old, forty horse mercury outboard, i said i probably could, but i have never actually worked on a mercury before, are their any problems, or tricks to sepparting the lower end, from the shaft, or is it just straighforward. I dont want to say no, as he has helped me out a lot, and knows i work on outboards, (though much smaller than that) but last time i agreed to help him out, was to change a clutch on a tractor, and what a nightmare that was, had to split the tractor in two, a six hour clutch change, came to a four day job.

If you go to this site http://www.crowleymarine.com/parts.cfm and have the year and model number you should be able to find an illustrated parts breakdown.
Been awhile since I did one of those but I think there is a nut for the shifter rod just below the swivel tube, front side of the motor.
Ooops, just saw the year and I've never worked on one that new but the nut may be in the same place.

There is a trick or two with things like the shift linkage that not going to show up with out a service manual
