Two years ago, they (EPA) closed my fuel dock. Since then, I have been bringing in fuel from gas stations six gallons at a time. In California, vehicles must use ultra-low sulfur diesel. So, I never had water or gunk in my primary filter ever in the 11 years I had owned the boat by then and in 1300 hours I had put on. In 2010, the primary filter was due and I changed it. In 2011, 130 hours later, there was water and gunk. I changed it. Now, 130 hours more, big time gunk and water.
The only change is gas-station diesel. I use Stabil diesel treatment religiously. The cap gasket is fine. I can only hope the ultra-low sulfur fuel is breaking up some of the old stuff in the tank and bringing it to the filter. As to the water, I have to believe it came from the station's tanks.
Anyhow, I am going to drain off fuel from the filter much more frequently and will plan on changing out the filters yearly (and carry a spare!).
