Hi all,
Does anyone have a pressure tank in their freshwater system? We usually get a drop in pressure before the pump kicks on to run our fresh water.

..................... shortly after buying the boat. I figured the life span of the pump would be greatly increased without the high frequency OFF/ON cycles.

The cylinder was by Jabsco.

Yup I do ... a BIG one. Reason: pump has less 'start-up' torque losses than when repeatedly cycling on/off .... energy savings!!! - important on a long distance cruising boat.

Yes. The pressure tank remedies that flow variation you are experiencing. Less cycling, less noise, longer pump duty cycles.

If you have a Flojet VSD pump you do not need an accumulator tank. They are little more expensive, but they are nearly silent and work well while using less power (according to the mfg).

Thanks guys, I just wonder sometimes why the PO's never thought this was important for twenty-five years. I'll call corporate and see if she'll let me buy it now.

Definitely!! Easy to install & well worth it..

I bought a variable speed pump a couple of years ago and as Steve says, it works fine without the accumulator.

Well, all said and done, I have had the same water pump for the last 5 years and I believe I paid close to $100 for it. It see the shureflo tank retails for $258 to prolong the service life of that pump. What I'm I missing here? I believe a live aboard or a full time cruiser may reap benefits from having an accumulator tank but for those of us that just sail for sport I don't see the need. After all it will occupy some scarce real estate and will eventually rot like all others.

Not sure where you are pricing the accumulator, but even West has them as low as $60.

What? That must be a tank for a huge yacht not a small sailboat. You're talking about $40.00 $60.00 for an accumulator tank for a small sailboat and they can be had for less if you search for RV as opposed to boat...

That Jabsco accumulator would be a great choice. I installed one years ago in minutes. It comes with easily exchangeable barbed and threaded fittings. Compact, no rust poly construction, bladder (doesn't get waterlogged) and adjustable (shrader valve)

Well I found a tank for a good price from AltEstore. I should have no problems finding a place for it and it appears that my corporate CEO is pleased. :dance: I also saw some solar panels really cheap from two different sources. Interesting set up on one for a portable generator, all solar.

Ok, you have us on the edge of our seats, so what is that good price? I assume it better than West's $320.

"corporate CEO"? Jeeze, tell it like it is: " accountant" ?

I am wondering what is wrong with a $60 Jabsco accumulator tank? They are about 1/2 the size too.
