Bird Poop Tactics

What do you all use to keep these birds, cormorants, from hanging out on your boat to dry their wings, and of course, crap all over the place? Stuff is nasty!

I was the second to the furthest boat out at our mooring area, but the furthest boat out decided to beach itself. Now I hate to say, I am the prime landing spot and toilet for my buddies the cormorants!

Is there a hunting season for these little buggers?

I used "bird spikes". They are pieces of stiff stainless steel wire embedded in plastic bases about 3' long. I secured them to the spreaders with silicone sealant. Unfortunately, I need new ones and I haven't found a source for them. I originally had found them in a marine supply store in Plymouth, MA.

I stretched stainless wire between the mast and the shrouds about 2-3 inches above the spreaders. Birds trip on the wire and can't land on the spreaders- works well. High test fishing line would work as well.

Unfortunately they don't just land on the spreaders. Lifelines, booms and rails are equally fine perches for our over lubed birds innards. After trying it all, the outer boats in our mooring field are resorting to ultra fine netting from bow to stern. It ain't easy or pretty but it seems effective. I feel your pain, Bummer.

You may have been asking this in jest, but just in case you seriously want to know if there's a hunting season for cormorants, the answer is no. Cormorants are protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. You might not get caught, but you will be breaking the law if you shoot them or kill them in any other way.

As much as I love birds, I get aggravated with them, too. They're pooping on our brand new dock. When the builder asked what color shingles we wanted, we should have specified "bird poop gray."

p.s. What makes their poop worse is that they eat fish. Dang it stinks!

We run a loose line on top of the sail cover from the backstay to the mast.
Its just a old jib sheet and it is not pulled tight. When they land on it, its not stable so they don't like it.
Won't cost you a thing to try this one

We have had luck running fishing line above our lifelines. I don't know if it would keep big birds away, but it seems to work for smaller ones.

I bought some rubber snakes from a dollar store and they have worked magic on the seagulls who were crapping on my boat. I just put them out before I leave for the day and then store them back when I head out to sail. Perhaps it's worth a try. Any toy store should have these.

I did the same. It did work for a while, but a month ago when I was pullling my boat out, I threw away 4 or 5 rubber snakes that had so much crap on them they were camoflaged into the boat. My main pproblem was that there was a boat moored furhter out than mine, then it broke it;s mooring and I became the toilet. The boat is back out and it has gotten better.

The item you are looking for is called bird a way and west marine carrries them

Have you ever thought of taking up falconary. It might be a bit hard to swing the lure on your boat to get it to come back, you know with the mast and rig being in the way, but if you weigh the thing before you let it fly, and you make sure its light, that means its hungry, and they are easy to get back when they are hungry.

I don't get your response.

it's a kite.

I hoist it with a jib halyard with the shakel around the stay to about ten feet high with a five foot line to it and any breeze makes it fly and bob about and it does not hit any other part of the rig being that it's that low.

birds see a preador and stay away.

it's the only thing I have tried that works.
