replacing original traveler on a O'Day 302

Traveler set up

While we are mostly O'Day owners here, we do necessarily know what your Traveler looks like. Any pictures of what you have and what you want?

Sounds similar to my O'Day 31. I was able to modify the existing traveler car with some blocks and track mounted traveler control ends from Garhauer. The control ends replaced the stops with the pegs and I was able to use the existing track without modification. One of the best modifications I've made to the boat. I just looked at their website and can't see th control ends I used but you might try calling them. They were very helpful an made some modifications to their existing control ends to more suit what I wanted. The fabrication took some time but the product is very good and reasonably priced.

Richard -

My 302 has the same traveler set-up as French Guy. And since her recent bottom job, the old girl has a new spring in her step, which of course means I am paying much more attention to trim than previoulsy.

I'll pursue Garhauer, but if you could look through your records for an item number of the control ends it would be much appreciated.

And thanks in advance for letting us know about this option.

Sorry, I took a look but can't find the invoice and details. But as I said you can talk to them and they should be able to help. If not, another option I looked at was traveler control ends from Rig Rite. Part # NF 1332L and 1332R. Similar to what I got from Garhauer but not quite the same.

Garhauer (Guido) all the way!

I replaced the PITA traveler on my 302 about 5 years ago. I had the old Fico traveler system with the pegs.

Call Guido at Garhauer. Tell him what you have and he'll fix you up with a new car and two new double blocks at each end.

Amazing difference. (and Garhauer stands behind their work - I had a minor problem and shipped the blocks back for some additional stiffening. They fixed them and shipped over night so I could sail on the upcoming weekend.

Really good people and really good products.

Thanks for the feedback. Garhauer answered Wednesday's e-mail suggesting I contact Guido. I'll update this thread later with the results.

Also, we have a calm wind forecast for the weekend. D-Dock @ Smithville always has sveral folks

I have that very same car and eye beam track on my 86 O'Day 222 by Nico and I'm not too fond of it. I kick my butt today for not buying the Garhaurer back then.
My boat came with the mainsheet hooked to a triangular plate on the backstay to the end of the boom and I hated it so I went to Rig-Rite and the guy sold me a used Johnson Handy-Lock and made me up a short piece of backstay for the Handy-Lock, omitting the triangular plate, and moving my open turnbuckle up a little higher on the backstay.
I mounted a piece of Teak across the seats in front of the companionway hatch for the Nico traveler and bolted it down good with backing plates.
I may be wrong about this but I think that Nico makes a car that will fit on that track that works with the block and tackle very similar to the Garhaurer. I'd still rather have the Garhaurer though.

You can keep the same track...

On my system, Guido provided a car that used the original track. You have to do some work to remove the end caps to put on the new car and the new blocks at the end...but it's a simple job. Two...three beers at the most.

This will make a hell of a difference, the beauty is that I can keep the existing rail. I can't wait to install them on my traveler (when it will be a bit warmer here in Boston!).

O'Day must have been fond of these....My 272 had them...miserable.
So not knowing better I call Nico Fico and they sent me the end blocks and it made all the difference in the world....that was maybe 18 years ago...I'm not remembering Garhaurer being that big of a deal back then.....I'd get them to supply....it was not a difficult installation.....even I did it.
