House on N.C. ICW

I've been tasked by my mother-in-law to look for a 3 bedroom house in N.C. on the ICW with a dock/pier (at least 5 feet of water). If anyone familiar with the area can advise what towns/locations to search in, I would appreciate some pointers. It would be used as a vacation home primarily.

Man that is going to be expensive. I know that both Morehead City and Beaufort have homes along the ICW. In Beaufort you have to cross the street. Actually going south from Morehead City, the entire length of Bogue Sound has homes along the ICW. Then there is Oriental, the parts up some of the creeks. Nice there because you have lots of sailing room.

Take a look at Fairfield Harbour, it is just next to New Bern, NC. A friend just had a house built there last year. Great pricing for what he got.

I agree with Stu.....Make sure there are a few slips so you can partake and maybe have a friend partake as well!

She has 2 houses in Fl. (about an hour north of Tampa) but is now widowed and considering disposing of them because of the memories and also to get something closer to Md. I guess she figures between me with my boat and her son with his 'stinkpot', we might make better use of something on the ICW.

There are many Condos available. Especially in the Myrtle Beach/ North Myrtle Beach area of South Carolina. While you do not have control and must buy what is out there, they are alternative to being able to get right on water:

is a place to start.

Water depts in basin vary, but some boats with 6 or more feet reside. There are six marinas in basin and some docks have deeper depths. Big 40 sailboats are common.

Your five foot requirement really puts you off the ICW in the south. The ICW is very shallow and shoally. You need to be on major river or harbor. Have you studied Charleston, SC?

I'm totally in love with Oriental N.C. It has a homey feel, nice people and great water.
