Still laughing, BillyK.. Reminds me of our first trip to Mexico.. Too long at sea and too much great tasting Mexican food when we got there!
I thought the Pinto analogy appropriate because of the gas in the back and the fire that started there.. again the Mexican trip came to mind !

If you want to avoid stripping screw holes in the fairly soft plastic material of the pump mounts...... Insert the screw in hole and gently press while turning counter clockwise until you feel the screw drop into the original threads. Then carefully turn the screw clockwise to tighten. This will avoid cutting multiple thread paths thus weakening the material in the hole.

Be sure to use a Teflon lube on the pump (check the archives for Peggy's recommendations) I do this at the beginning of each sailing season and it lasts all year. We live aboard in Great Lakes fresh water.

"My Jabsco is now 17 years old and gives no trouble at all."

Not surprising because the ones that were made 15-20 years ago were actually made to last...whereas Jabsco toilets made in the last 7-10 years are purposely designed to be "disposable" because there's no profit in repair parts and service kits, only in new pumps. Thetford discontinued the whole Wilcox-Crittenden product line because W-C toilets for that very same reason. Unfortunately, marine toilets aren't the only things about which that's true.

I have never needed to replace the joker valve ...

If that's true, it's amazing that the toilet can flush at all...and it has to take a zillon pumps. The joker valve in ALL manual toilets should be replaced annually...here's why:

JOKER VALVE 101

Most people think that the only thing the joker valve does is acts as a check valve to stop backflow from returning to the toilet or odor from the tank from escaping through the toilet. But that's not a joker valve's most important function...in fact, the joker valve is THE single most important replaceable part in a manual toilet.

Here’s how the discharge half of the pump works: On the upstroke of the piston, a vacuum is created in the area beneath the piston. This causes the joker valve to close tightly, and the flapper valve beneath the pump to open, allowing some of the contents of the toilet bowl to be drawn into the bottom half of the pump. Then, on the down stroke of the piston, the flapper valve is slammed shut, and the effluent is forced out of the bottom of the pump, through the joker valve, and off down the line. But when the joker valve becomes worn and/or there's a buildup of sea water minerals on it, it can no longer seal tightly on the upstroke of the piston...less vacuum is generated when you pump it. And as it becomes more worn less and less vacuum, till finally the bowl contents simply move up and down a bit, but don't go anywhere. Sometimes the flapper valve needs to be replaced too, which is why toilets should also be rebuilt at least every 5-6 years as PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE.

You prob'ly won't notice the loss of efficiency at first because it's so gradual...same as we don't see that we've gotten a little older than we were yesterday when we look in the mirror each morning. But I guarantee you that if it's been two years or longer since you replaced the joker valve, you need to pump the toilet at least 50% more times to move the bowl contents to the tank or all the way out the thru-hull....IF they're getting there at all any more.

Marine toilets have moving parts that require maintenance. PREVENTIVE maintenance is called that because it PREVENTS problems that have to be fixed. You get to do PREVENTIVE maintenance on YOUR terms, when it's convenient for YOU...unlike repairs, which NEVER are needed at a convenient time.

"...and only re grease the piston twice a year

It's not the piston rod that needs grease, 'cuz only things that rub against each other need lubrication...and the piston rod doesn't rub against anything...the seals, o-rings etc ON the piston rub against the inside of the pump cylinder wall. So it's the cylinder wall that actually needs lubrication. And it's easy to do. All toilets leave the factory slathered in thick non-petroleum based grease...buy a tube. Jabsco toilets: remove the top of the pump...Raritan PH II/PHC: remove the pump from the base, which requires removing 4 screws. Stick the nozzle on the tube into the pump an give it a HEALTHY squirt. Replace the top of the pump/put the pump back onto the base. BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVERTIGHTEN SCREWS! Pump a couple of times to spread the grease all over the inside of the pump...you're good to go for a year.

Steve... "We have one well know nsailor (that shall be kept nameless) on this site that has spent over $600 (and it may be growing) on Jabsco repair kits.

Not repair kits, new pumps, which cost about the same as a kit. And he's now spent over $1000 in new pumps for two $100 toilets.

Squid...if it ain't broke yet, don't fix it. When it does break, don't fix it...replace it. Meanwhile just keep it well lubricated.

Raritan

In 2007 I took delivery of my new H-36 and from the first time of using the WC head was a real pain for everyone needing to be pumped for ever and got the dealer to change out for new pump and same problem for my wife and most guest they needed to pump it for ever,I new it needed TLC to pump it to work.
Went on other boats that had the Raritan PHII it was trouble free with little pumping to work and so used my old bowl on the LBA kit from this forum and now anyone using the head say it works great and needs just a few pumps to do the job.
I do flush it out with fresh water every day when it is used and flush out with fresh water with the sink drain and flush the whole system with fresh water when I empty the holding tank,I lube it 2 x a year.

That's what I wanted to hear.. I mean I'm a realist, it's a cheap toilet, but the "throw it out and buy new" mentality is killing me..It still works..

It's the same with sails..."Don't try to repair/reinforce...Throw them all out and buy new ones" to my windows leaking..." Pull them all out and buy new ones"... to the type of paint I want to use..."Throw that crap out and buy the expensive/name brand stuff"...

No wonder the middle class people are scared out of sailing.... I say "Screw the 'Jones'es' (and you know who you are) ...I'm gonna do my own thing...

But if you eat them once they've fallen, you will put them in your Jabsco later on.. That would probably be a 4 pump dump..

That's our method, Squid. It ain't broke but I will do maintenance on it. But we bought a project boat and knew it when we signed on the dotted line.

Last week's fix was stopping the water intrusion through the cabin roof from the companionway turtle. Took a while to find as the water was leaking over the cabin roof in an open area and coming out about 8 inches from it's entry point. A real headscratcher.

Next week's fix is replacing the rotten wood around the cabin portholes. Which involves taking out the portholes to get to the wood. But the good news is we now know why the wood is rotten. It seems the portholes were not maintained and the caulking has failed leading to water leaks into the boat and rotten wood behind the portholes. So this one time, the repair also fixes the root cause. YAY!!

Thanks Billy, you answeredd more in one post than Peggy has answered in the past year. Nothing like vivid description to put things in perspective.

i just installed this exact assembly last month.. I've only ever owned Jabsco crappers, and they've always done a fine job of sucking down a solid "two stage" dump when i thought there would be no way this little head could eat a poo of this magnitude. Whats a better test of a head then after a night with a case of beer, some whiskey, bad Chinese food, a piece of old pizza and a cheesesteak? I filled that bowl up beyond any engineer's expectation of what max load would be along with significant wiping to erase last nights memory from my rear end. Then standing up, turning around, closing my mouth and squinting my eyes for fear of the wrath of Jabsco rejecting my deposit. And with a flip of the switch, a twist of the handle and a pump of the lever, inch by inch good ole Jabsco processed that load and moved it down the tube and two feet to the left into the hold without so much as a shudder. Why would i need anything else?

I'm sure that I'm a bit late to respond , but this must of been the best and hilarious description I've ever read about using the head en getting rid of the result.
Man Billy , I hereby promote you to the boards standup comedian.
Please keep up the good work , and next time be sure to bring your friend Jabsco again.

Maybe that's because I've never found it necessary to spew sewage to teach people how to deal with it.

I guess you're right , this is a guy thing.
Although girls can make a (head)mess of it too you know.
But indeed , apparently you have to be a guy to see the fun of it.
Girls might - I repeat , MIGHT - be able to do several things at a time , boys are champions in doing one thing at a time and some of us are experts in describing it .

You know , ......maybe some girls should start laughing before they are really happy, just out of fear of dying at the end without ever having laughed

Il faut rire avant que d’être heureux, de peur de mourir sans avoir ri

Pardon my French.

Kind regards
