Trying to estimate price of "Ginnaker"

Kind of a oddball topic, but I thought I would go to my Catalina 30 mates on this one. I found a Northsail 0.75 ounce "Ginnaker" in a pacific blue sailbag marked as such in my garage tucked away under some stuff. It was made for my tall rigged Catalina 30. I never realized I had the thing! My wife said she took it off the boat to save space when we bought the boat!! But, being a lake sailor and not into racing, I really have no use for it. On Lake Lanier it would be a lot of work, especially since I do not have a whisker pole.

I am trying to put a cost on this since I will probably sell it. It seems to be in great shape and hardly used. Odd name, "Ginnaker", since someone could not decide if it were a true spinnaker or genoa.

Whats a sail like this worth? Any estimate range? :confused:

Sounds like a nice sail. And its pretty easy to sail; no pole needed! Gennakers are flatter cruising asyms that North sells. And you are right, in many ways a cross between a genoa and a spinnaker.

The sail prob would cost $2K new, and maybe $400 more if it has a snuffer, or sock. What can you get for it? No rips, stains, or patches? No sail numbers on it yet? Maybe 50% of new? Measure both the leech and the luff of the sail, it FITS your boat but not only yours; any boat with a luff length about the same can fly it!

Hi Bob, Gennaker is the older term for an asymmetric spinnaker. It doesnt require a pole to fly it. It is a fun sail to use and isn't that labor intensive once you get used to it. It does help to have a snuffer as it makes for a smooth inside gybe. I usually consider only flying mine in winds of ten knots or less apparent. Northsails make a really nice sail. I would think that depending on condition, the addition of sheets, blocks, and snuffer the price could range between 800 and 1200 dollars for a good used one. Fair winds to ya, lindcat

Thanks fellas......very useful information. I use a 150 genoa now and that is all I need for Lake Lanier.

If you decide to sell, send me a message. I may be interested. If you find that I am too much of a cheapskate, throw it on ebay. I am always searching for spinnakers on ebay and I can tell you that there are not many out there. You might also check baconsails.com. They could sell it for you or you could just look there for ideas on the value.

If I were you, I would hang on to it. The Asym is very easy to fly... just like a jib. Perfect for those "the wind just died" days...

I have an assym spinnaker with a sock that I am very interested in selling. It was for my TR C-30 and is very lightly used. It is a .75 oz ripstop spinnaker that was made by Gleason sailmakers. I must admit that I very rarely flew it and it is in excellent condition and comes with a sock but you would need to supply your own lines. Here are the dimensions: 45'4" head to tack; 39'2" head to clew; 21'6" foot; 19'6" shoulder. I want $1500 + shipping firm. If interested, email me at gladrags at Comcast dot net. I drew a picture and hopefully attached it. If so, you will see its a pretty chute!

I appreciate your comment and link. Went to that site which indicated a new spin with a sock would sell for about $700 more. Since mine has been flown only a handful of times, it is nearly new and a good value. If someone wants to present an offer, I will consider it.

A brand new top quality Doyle APC (Asymmetrical Power Cruiser) is $1768 here, for a C30 Tall Rig. Used sail prices are very difficult to nail down, the maker and condition are the most important variables of course. Prices vary from $295 to $795 at Minneysyachtsurplus:

Hey Dave...

I didn't look, but I'm going to assume that;

The Doyle price was sans sock.

The used prices were for symmetrical spinnakers. It would very very rare to find an used asym of any size for less than $500. Used syms much more common, and racers sell them when they still look/work OK but are a bit blown out.
