This is some very good news for Cherubini owners. I wonder how many other models of Hunter and boat manufacturers used Dahmer struts? Now I am thinking it might be wise to ante up and install one before spring splash. At those prices it would be nice if they would send it with the cutlass bearing already installed.

Mine also broke this summer on our 1981 H30. It is a Y shape bronze casting with the cutless on the bottom of the Y. I called Hunter and they said they were made by Dahmer Marine and gave me a phone number. I looked at it closer and found Dahmer Marine on the casting under the layers of paint. But no one answered even though they have a website and showed the strut I wanted. http://www.dahmermarine.com/Struts.htm part No 2010.

I eventually found out that Dahmer was apparently sold and the parts are now owned by Millers Island Propeller, as of quite recently. http://millersislandprop.com/site/news_detail/dahmer_marine_hardware/
I just ordered a replacement from Millers for $425 (ouch) and am awaiting delivery.

I considered having one made up out of stainless steel and am still not sure whether that would have been more expensive or not. This seemed more likely to fit exactly.

Let us know how it looks. How tricky is bronze casting? Can these guys mess it up being new at it? Or are they?

Emailed them today. Got an answer back in a few hours. $384 for my strut. $30 more plus the cost of the bearing to press it into the strut. A few days turn around.

How does their bearing price compare with the best online price? I ask because installing the bearing is a pretty simple task. Just need a threaded rod and a couple of heavy fender washers.

He gave me a ballpark figure of $80 for the cutlass bearing, and I've seen them for a lot less on the internet, but I don't know about quality. What is a good quality bearing? What should we be using?

That's a little high, $50. being my previous top price. But I can see paying $60. more to have the strut ready to install. Of course for $80. you hope it is a quality bearing.

Miller's Island Prop, More Info

Got some answers to my questions about their casting process, in case anyone else was curious. Seems they've been doing it for a long time and we shouldn't see any drop off in quality from Dahmer.

Millers Island Propeller has been serving satisfied customers since 1971. As a family owned business steeped in pride and tradition, Millers Island propeller provides superior products and unrivalled service.

After beginning its business as a foundry and propeller reconditioners, the company's capabilities have expanded to include a machine shop and distribution services. In 1999, the purchase of the historic Bethlehem Steel Wire Stranding Mill was completed increasing manufacturing and warehouse space to 55,000 Sq.Ft. with rail service...
Regarding the struts, Rob Wheeler told me:

...We cast our products from ingot manganese bronze C86500, which is the industry standard. It is also the same material that Dahmer used for their struts and rudders.

The strut came in from Miller Island Propeller and fits well. The predrilled holes matched up exactly with the 6 existing locations. Looks like we're back in business. I sure appreciate all the help in locating a strut. It was $385.00, pluss the price of a cutlass bearing, and I had them install the cutlass bearing so it was ready to go when I received it.

Nelsonhow, I am not following your line of thought. If you are posting to Tom, the thread originator, then he already has the new strut installed. And as has been mentioned in Tom's thread and many others Dahmer has been out of business for at least two years, probably longer. We all have Dahmer struts if they are original. The challenge has been finding replacements. Or maybe you know all of this and I don't understand your last two posts. If so I apologize.

Sorry for the confusion. I was looking for a replacement strut for my H-27 and I found out that Millers Island has all of the plans and forms from Dahmer Marine strut castings. Fortunately i was able to straighten my strut so I didn't require a replacement. What I sent was an image of the Millers Island web page.

We have a neighbor to our yard with an H27 looking for a strut as well-- and we have not found anything. A plan is afoot to fabricate one out of G-10 (not a plan I am fond of; but it would work). Anyone finding definitive sources for such parts for Gen-1 Hunters is welcome to get in touch with me and maybe earn himself a cold drink and a Philly cheese steak for his generous information.

I guess I'm confused. These guys, posted earlier in the thread, have the struts forms for all the Cherubini Hunters, don't they? Are you looking for something else?
