Moving Emmamanuel to Maryland

Scott-I have heard the Trent-Severn Waterway is a good route. I would love to have the names of the marinas. Thanks!

Dutchmans Cove Marina has the best rates for mast stepping / unstepping and then a short run over to the Trent.

Is the Trent-Severn deep enough for a Hunter 40.5? I don't know the draft of her boat but I know some folks who have done the TS and they thought it might be sketchy for our 5' 8" draft boat. I agree that that sounds like a really cool waterway, especially the Big Chute overland rail portage.

If this is simply moving the boat, then the shortest route is the best. But...
One of the most beautiful trips you could do in your life as a sailor is going down the St-Lawrence, going by Montreal, Québec City, sail up the Saguenay fjord watch the Beluga whales, coast down to Gaspé, turn right and go to the Magdalen Islands, down through Canso straight, coast to Halifax, keep going coastal to Bar Harbour Maine (the navigation might be a little tricky with the 50 foot tides but most survive!).
From there you are back in the US, just coastal sail to Boston, Cape Cod, Nantucket etc.. Go to Long Island Sound and through Hell's Gate to NY City. Stay a week at the 79th street boat basin or in a Marina in Jersey City (great view). From there getting to the Chesapeake is child's play.
Of course this is a bit longer but well worth it!
Alternately you can go directly from Lunenburg to Nantucket and "save" a week to ten days... and miss the Gulf of Maine.
All the electronic charts are on one chip nowadays, The BSB charts on a dvd for the computer are easy to get. If you need the paper charts give me a shout, I have them all.
I've done the trip (in whole or in part) half a dozen times and truly think it is worth doing, for those who think it's a rough trip. I once did it on a Tanzer 26 with a 9.9 outboard!
No matter which way you go, have a great trip, not just moving the boat!

The Hunter 40.5 has a draft of 4'-10" if I'm correct.

Limiting depth on the TS is 6' and 8' depending on the area. If she's travelling in the spring, levels will be up, so should not be an issue vs. late summer. Also depends on how much snow we get this winter and rains in the spring.

That's what I'M talking about! ... sounds epic ... I'd sign up for that trip ... love to have the time!

Trent-Severn looks like a good option, too. Skipping Detroit & Lake Erie in favor of rural Ontario sounds like a perfect trade-off.

Well Scott,
From Bayfield WI to Annapolis MD is a little over 3,000 nautical miles. With stops and sightseeing I would plan on three months... If I didn't have time enough to do it in one season I'd stop wherever I am and fly or drive home & come back next season.
I've done that in Marion MA, Oxford MD, Halifax NS, Lisbon Portugal, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) Spain, Le Marin Martinique. Most of this was when I was still working... I'd come back to work for eight or nine months and then go back to the boat for six to eight weeks... Portugal, Spain and Martinique was after I retired!
The problem is you never really want to stop doing this!

Sorry to hear that Captain Grumpy has had to sail out of your radar range (the moniker was a bit foreboding in the first place) but welcome to the world of possibilities. I also enjoy and adore the mid-Chessy area and try to get on a boat there twice a year. One of the best things about the Chessy is that many boats stay in the water year round!
While the Annapolis area ("a drinking town with a sailing problem") is great because of all the other sailboats and nautical underpinnings it is also a bit more pricey then some of the places a bit more out of the way like Galesville or the South or Rhode rivers. Deltaville, in VA is supposed to be one of the cheaper places but is a quite a bit farther south but does not have the buzz that 'Naptown has.
I'd join you for your Hudson River transit, if you go that way.
I cook, clean, can stand a watch, look better in a shirt, not sure about cranking the Yanmar but I'd give it a try and yes, I'm happily married and 53. I know the lower Hudson and LI Sound pretty well but would love to see more of the upper Hudson.
Oh yeah, I'm a smoker, which was enough for Roger Long to get someone else to help him transit the East River.
