O' Day 25 Bulkheads & Chainplates

So who has actually removed and replaced the bulkheads & chainplates on their O' Day 25? I have Don Casey's book and have looked at the West System page on swapping out bulkheads, and done numerous searches on the interwebs but, I want to know how it is done on my boat, a 1977. Removal information would be extremely helpful if anyone has first hand experience doing it. I have read in various places that they are screwed and glassed in. I have not had a chance to dig in to it on my boat as of yet, mostly because of time and the fact that it is about 15 degrees today. Anyway, as I said, I would really appreciate some first hand knowledge to help get me started in the right place.

Unless you are really looking for valuable information.... guess I should look elsewhere than an O' Day Owners Forum huh? My first post for help on my new to me boat and this is what I get... Awesome people.

Could use some REAL help on this if anyone actually can.........

Taking out my bulkheads wasn't that hard because I had already removed the compression post (it was rotted on the bottom from standing water on the cabin sole because water was leaking in through the chainplate holes in the deck and the boat was sitting for I don't know how long), the vanity across from the head (also rotted from the leaking) and the partially rotted platform under the portapotty. Now that I think about it you do need to remove a lot of stuff. I had also removed the fabric hull liner because it was moldy and separating from the hull. I spent 18 months on my rebuild.
The mast should be down to keep the weight off from the top.
After you've removed all the screws that could possibly be holding the bulkhead in place and peeled back the hull liner there should be some fiberglass tabbing attaching the bulkhead to the hull. You'll notice that there is a gap between the bulkhead and the hull. If the bulkhead was hard against the hull it would create a hard spot on the hull and it would crack from the hull flexing. The fiberglass tabs help to distribute the pressure from the bulkhead to the hull. Cut through the tabs with a reciprocating saw, a high speed grinder with a cut off blade or whatever you can come up with. The bulkheads should slide out. You might have to jack up the cabin roof if it is bearing down on the bulkheads. I didn't have to. I don't think I've forgotten anything. Like I said, I had everything removed and out before I replaced my bulkheads. There's a bunch of us on this forum that have gone through this. Just be patient when you post- though in the off season we usually have more time on our hands.

Thanks for the info Rich. It is supposed to be "warm" this weekend so I am going to be crawling around the inside of her and getting my bearings on what needs to come out and what can stay. I am going to continue to look around here and see what I can find but I think you have given me a starting point.

You asked a question that has been asked many times and several good threads exist that include detailed pictures.

'Captain Herring' our host provides a search mechanism for topics of threads. Did you seach the thread history? Did you search the archives?

Understand we are not paid to answer your question. We just sail old O'Day sailboats and many have been rebuilt. However, if you want to send Rich or others some shekels, I am sure they would be receptive.

Since I joined this forum at least three have posted how they replaced bulkheads in O'Day 25/26 in great detail to include pictures which are still in archives. Imagine a pictorial?

Hint, learn to use resources of this site. It is really a good site, great bunch of sailors. It is not Google in automatically answering questions. Sometimes it requires work (aka effort) on your part.

Rich is not only one who has replaced bulkheads. Search archives for others, seek and learn.

Understand that the 26 was an updated 25 and the 23 was very similar in design and construction.

If you do it correctly, you will get a decent sailboat.

ShoalDrafter - Yes I did do many searches. Had to ask a question in regards to how to get the search to work also. I found lots of information after that. Lots of people said "search the archives". Though finding a thread with detailed pictures has yet to occur I am sure I will eventually find them. In my experience on other forums, people have nicely just replied with a link to their thread and all has been good. No "talkings to" with large bold fonts. No worries I will be sure to exhaustively search the "archives" before I ask any further questions. Sorry if I repeated a thread. Not my first rodeo.

Sorry about bold print. Note that most of us even sign our names to post. Go ahead and ask questions, I was just pointing out reasons for lack of detailed replies to your rant.

Actually, you are posting on a correct forum, just not forum that gets most replies. In fact I suspect that most do not follow this forum on a regular basis. Try the "Ask an O'Day Owner" forum and you will likely get more responses.

I said that the 23, 25 & 26 are all made and designed similarly. Seach under the the other two boats or use generic questions covering all O'Day boats. Most other boats of similar size have great similiarities in constuction.

I have seen recent post on the other forum by those who have rebuilt boats. They are not seeing your request here?
