Did anybody aboard here catch the Southern California weekend that just passed? The east Santa Barbara Channel off Ventura and Oxnard was a scene of incomparable beauty. Mild temperatures with an interesting mixture of warmish Santa Ana winds near Oxnard, but cooler northwesterlies near Ventura. Crystal-clear blue skies, low seas, and greenish mountains or islands to be viewed in every direction. Sailing heaven; it just doesn't get any better!

I suppose I should be happy someone is sailing in nice weather but I am grumpy that my sailing season is over here in the northern climes where it has been grey, windy and cold for the last few days and my boat is on the hard and covered until at least April. :cry:

San Francisco weather was 65 F and 10-15 knots last Sunday and forecast to be 66 F and 10-15 knots on Wed. As a result, I cleared my calendar for a nice Wed sail.

We were also out there on Sunday but a little futher South, it was as good as it gets. At MDR it was in the 80s on land but in the low 70s off shore. Seems like even the sea lions were coming up to look around and enjoy the day.

Gosh, I hate to be a naysayer but...We brought our boat up from San Diego to Dana Point on Saturday, and though it should have been a lovely day and a possible sail day if the darn wind had just clocked around a little.....but alas it did not and it turned out to be exactly on our nose the entire 13+ hours..... and, sadly, the Santa Ana that brought the warmth, deposited a thick brown haze along the shoreline. The gem though, was the sunset and the moon rise......and we were thankful that the brown haze lifted as it became dark so we had no visibility issues coming into the harbor.
Of course, the next day,Sunday we saw the wind came from the west !!! Of COURSE it did!!!!:cry:

Saturday was a little strange in the east Santa Barbara Channel at Oxnard and Ventura. The warmish east wind got up into the high teens late that morning inside Channel Islands Harbor (CHI) at Oxnard. We took off to go to Ventura (distant 6 n. mi. NNW). Near the harbor entrance yachts were filing in from sea; we figured coming back from Santa Cruz Island which is not such a good place to be during Santa Ana (anchorages are unprotected from easterly quadrants). We chatted with a few going by; mid-20's with gusts to 28-29 kt outside the harbor. Gusts were hitting low 20's at the harbor mouth as we tucked in a reef and took off. Glorious sailing in the lee of the land in the warmish air; beam reach on the std tack. It was perfectly clear (I guess not as much smog up there as is near SD and DP). About a mile north of CHI the wind suddenly shut off for a few minutes then began filling from the NW at 12-15 kt, getting a bit more westerly as it strengthened; cooler but with some warm currents in there from the mixing. Next thing we're shaking out the reef and sailing close-hauled to close-reach on a port tack the rest of the way into Ventura Harbor. Sunday brought some haze around the islands, but then by mid-day to afternoon very pleasant northwesterly/westerly winds; low seas near shore (knocked down by the east winds the day before, etc.) Blue sky; just really nice.

Sorry the SD-DP trip was so arduous and unfun. I've made that trip a few times in a single run. On the Bav38 it's a bit faster under power, only 8-9 hr.

KG, thank you for such a great descriptive of you days, I feel better just having read it!
I love your area, and we have considered moving that direction multiple times.

Don't get me wrong, any time on the water is great, but we wanted to sail in the worst way! We have made it in 10 hours (sailing) but usually 12 ...... almost 14 was the longest... but gosh, nothing to complain about....... the water was great and saw lots of dolphin, life is good.:)

You guys are breakin' my heart. I miss the Pacific in so many ways. We launched at Channel Islands so many years ago that there weren't even slips in part of the basin. Same with Dana Point. Del Rey had just been converted from a swamp, PC Wetland. Fair Winds and Full Sails...

Too true. We thankfully get to leave Bayfield just about the time the Pack is 6-0 and the locals start to get uppity.

Had a "bracing" sail Monday with temperature in the upper 40's F and winds in the 20 knot range.. Glad we had the hot choclate in the thermos 'cause the lake was too rough to work in the galley.. Mighty fine..

Some of the best sailing of the season on the Chesapeake this week! Thanksgiving was light southerlies and temps in the upper 50's, not a cloud in the sky. By Saturday we were positioned to run back up from Virginia and had the bay to ourselves. Visited our favorite spots, watched the last of the straggling migratory birds working their way south - from a snug anchor, and by Sunday a front had come through and we running before 25 knot winds! Monday we were apparently warmer than NOLA! That won't last long. 10 days 'til haul, and the anniversary of snowmaggedon '09. A great season with many sailing memories. Save the Bay!

I'd love to sail the Chesapeake in the Spring or Fall. I actually have the cruising guide that I bought some years ago when I lived in St. Petersburg, FL, but we never made it up there b/f coming to CA. I'm putting it back on "the list." Thanks!

Spent Fri and Sat nights at Avalon (Catalina Island). Great weekend and coming back, it was flatter (no swells) than I've ever seen.
