I have a Garmin network with a 0183 chartplotter. I am planning on replacing my AP and instruments next spring. I would like to buy devices with NMEA 2000 support but I also want to connect my chartplotter. I want to display speed, depth and temp from my 2000 transducer to my 0183 charplotter. I also want to supply waypoint info to my new 2000 AP.

Has anyone used a NMEA 2000 to 0183 converter? Does it work well?

I would call Garmin

I would contact Garmin tech support. They have always been very knowledgable and informative when I have called.

BTDT.

They do not have a product like this nor will they recommend one from another manufacturer although they say it should work.

Also, first level tech support has degraded recently. I do not get the same level of knowledgeable tech that I used to. When asking about this, they recommended that I simply upgrade my chartplotters that are only 1 year old.

Maretron sells the Simrad AT 10 adapter (and related simnet-Maretron NMEA2000 adapter cable) that does the adaptation it will take the NMEA0183 to a Simnet/NMEA2000, you will then need their Simnet to Maretron NMEA 2000 adapter cable.

I did a similar hybrid, but my Chartplotter MFD was NMEA 2000, while everything else (AP/wind/speed/depth) remained NMEA0183. You won't likely know how much of your NMEA 2000 produced data will show up on the NMEA0183 chartplotter until you hook it up, since the display is older technology and may not be able to use the 2000 device data format.

If it doesn't work you have the perfect excuse to sell that Garmin unit and get one of the smokin'fast Simrad MFD's running native NMEA2000.

My lowrance is doing 0183 to the radio while doing 2000 on the network

But nothing in 2000 follows the standard all that well as there all trying to keep it proprietary

Tommays, I just upgraded all of my electronics last season. I talked with individual manf reps at shows and also to sevreal vendors who sell multiple brands.

The consensus seemed to be there were some initial compatibility issues but that today most NMEA 2000 gear will work together without issue. The exeception being Raymarine.

I went Garmin and am very happy with the results.

Almost all N2K electronics play very well together today and if anyone visits the Panbo site, there are lots of tests that Ben has done to show how well it works. Raymarine has not yet integrated N2K into their electronics, although perhaps that will now change with Flir at the helm. They still use the SeaTalk system which is only compatible with SeaTalk unless an NMEA to SeaTalk Interface box is used. Chuck

My Raymarine Seatalk autohelm, depth, wind, temp.,speed instruments work well with the Navico Simrad MFD running NMEA 2000. If I remember correctly, the Raymarine devices have an output in NMEA 0183 that cables up to the Simrad MFD and is interpreted. A simple adaptor end did the connection.

Related, kept the outdated Raymarine chartplotter and moved it to the lower nav station where it provides a useable redundant navigation system using the same sensor devices.
