Have any of you ever watched the Blue Angels from your boat at their Pensacola NAS show? If so, where do you anchor to watch it? Are you in protected waters? The show will be held November 11, 12, and 13.

I would love to go this year but I have a few things to do on the boat before I can make a trip that far (i.e. house batteries, motor mounts, etc.).
Perhaps next year.

T Frere.. Did that several years back on a friend's big Hatteras Sedan.. We anchored just south of the base, and just north of the intercoastal there at the entrance channel to the bay. If the wind is light and from the north, it is a fine place.. There were about 100 boats anchored there watching.. Quite a show.. If the wind is south, moving a little west of that choke point in the ICW works well .. It is a hoot..

In 2007 on a trip from Ky Lake to Punta Gorda, we were fortunate to hit Big Lagoon at the time of the airshow. I'm an ex air force pilot, so I was particularly interested in the show. We anchored in the south of Big Lagoon the night before and were 2 NM from the center of both runways. We were well south of the ICW channel which runs along the north side of Big Lagoon in that area. On the first day, on Friday, we watched the entire show. It lasted several hours with the Blue Angels performing in the afternoon. I think the show started around 10 or 11 AM.

They were using RW 25/07 for the show and we saw plenty of action. It was a lot of fun and I would do it again if I were in the area at the right time. Where we were, there were not a lot of boats near us. On the east end of Big Lagoon there were a lot of boats anchored in the cut just south of the ICW cut and the SE part of the Big Lagoon. I liked our spot better and we weren't packed in with all the other boats.

Our yacht club does an annual cruise to watch this show and anchors at Ft. McRee, on the western tip of Pensacola Pass. We haven't yet gone, planning to go this year. Entrance to the cove is from the west and is said to be a bit tricky, local guidance is to stick to the centerline between the points of land going in. This is a well-protected anchorage, but it will have quite a few boats in it.

Anywhere in Big Lagoon will provide a decent view, as the airshow flys from Sherman Field just to the north. Probably the best thing to do would be to anchor just west of Robertson Island (many folks call it Sand Island since it's just a big sand pile made of dredge spoil) and then dinghy ashore with your cooler and some lawn chairs and climb up to the top. The island is about 25 or 30 feet high, so you'll get a great view. Anchoring to the south side of the island is popular, but the Fort McRee area gets very busy, quite crowded actually, and the big sand pile island will be between you and the air show. We prefer to stay further west near Spanish Point. Look it up on Google Earth and you can see where everything is in relation to the airfield.

yes, I have seen the Pensacola NAS air show and it is awesome. Unbelievable how low those planes can fly.
