Since I found out here it's possible to sail faster than the wind I guess I shouldn't be surprised when some scientists claim they measured particles traveling faster than light. Makes me wonder if I really know anything.

You should be surprised that particles travel faster than light as it means that Mr. Einstein was wrong and we need to rethink things. It could also explain why quantum mechanics (small stuff) and his theory of relativity (big stuff) are so different.

If true, the Physics world will be wide open. Mr. Hawking may have another shot to figure it all out!

Not surprised and thats why the 'quantum physics' folksies were always in opposition to Einsteins Theory oF Relativity .... everyone had a 'consensus', doesnt that sound familiar re.: 'global warming', etc.

OBTW --- a land sailer with wind-propeller drive DID go faster than the wind ... and did it DDW using only the elegantly simple principals of trigonometry applied to the oncoming 'wind'.

It is worse than that caguy, everything you know is wrong. As soon as they publish a book on some subject a new "fact" is discovered that changes what should be in the book. Students are taught the wrong thing because it is "in the book"...... So we can surmise that all the "facts" will over time be overturned so....

Bill --- you have that absolutely correct about "its in the book, therefore it MUST be correct".

For example, the Wright brothers stunningly discovered that the wind doesnt 'speed' up on the back side of a sail and then 'rush along' so that it again ultimately 'rejoins' with the wind that travelled on the 'windward' side. They discovered that the wind essentially 'circulates around' sail/wing and that lift is a result of that circulating wind having 'viscosity'.

And the 'books' that most still use to explain 'lift' havent been changed since BEFORE the Wright Brothers and in spite of their stunning empirical discovery of 'lift' due to 'viscous circulation flow'.

I don't believe any of the researchers said Einstein...

...was all wrong. They respect that he showed them a way to look at things, and they respect that they would be less far along without his work. What gives us the right fling insults? Unless you are up on the topic, it's just gum flapping.

What the researchers said, paraphrased, is this: Newton developed laws of motion that were correct... up to a point. Einstein combined space, mass, and time into an extended theory that was correct... up to a point. The quantum mechanics guys have theories that are correct... up to a point. All of these guys have moved the ball forward. Sure, occationally a guy thinks he's got it all figured out with a few elegant expressions, and then nature goes and shows us another layer.

We're going to be using Newtons laws and Einstein's theories, where they fit, for the next thousand years. And we're going to learn more stuff to fill in the blank spots. I'm just glad I don't need to understand it all. But I also see these as very exciting times. I find myself wondering if the researchers hope they are right, or whether they hope they are wrong! A short cut in another dimension is some crazy stuff.

Celestial navigation still uses an earth centric discription of the celestial system. Is completely wrong but it works.

Yeah! You blasted me on that one about a year ago. Thanks professor, I've been looking at my sails entirely differently ever since.
