Does anyone know some nice anchoring spots around Corpus? I never realized before that the bay was so shallow. I rode the Lexington through there once when it moved from Ingleside to it's permanent home in Corpus and wondered why we had to lighten her up so much. Now I know. My wife was watching the depth sounder like a hawk and lots of places going straight across the bay toward corpus from Aransas the bottom came up around 3 feet. Mostly it was around 12 or more though. I found the active captain website and it has a few good places marked but I was wondering if anyone here has more suggestions. Just looking for places to go relax, drop a crab trap or two and maybe watch the dolphins without worrying about getting out to push. haha. Our draft is 4.6 feet. Thanks.

Have you invested in a set of charts yet? Nice to have. Or a chartplotter with depth info.

If you go to the NOAA site you can download all the charts for free along with a free chartplotting program to manage them.

I have a couple charts so far of the area. One has all the fishing areas and wrecks, reefs etc on it. Not a whole lot of detail though for the bottom. We're looking at chart plotters now. I'm trying to find one I like but not sure which one to get yet. Just doing it the old way now with a handheld GPS and manually.

If you find the NOAA website (http://www.charts.noaa.gov/) not to your liking.... there are three stores listed in Corpus Christi that will sell you detailed paper charts for the area you desire. In fact, there is a good chance the clerk will give you the local advice you seek.

go check out shamrock cove.we go there all the time.nobody there, even on holiday weekends.stay away from shore.too shallow.we anchor out and dinghy ashore.but do not go to shamrock island.it is a protected bird sanctuary. you can go to mustang island.very nice place.clear water most days.you can see it on google earth.just search shamrock island texas.and there it is.you can see the cove between the shamrock island and mustang island.are you at c.c. marina?

We're still in the Aransas pass marina right now. Trying to decide between CC and the Mustang island marina. Each of them say they are the safest from storm but I'm researching it more. We need a nice place to shower too while on the boat. I have one in the cockpit but the neighbors might now appreciate it much. I don't know why.........:snooty:

I looked at a google map of your area and I can definitely see why you want to relocate. All the commercial and fishing boat, gulf bound traffic funnels through Aransas pass, with skinny water around the marina....so it looks like you have to venture out in the channel to get anywhere. Wereas if you relocate north or south it appears there are some interesting less congested areas to just go out for a leisurely daysail. Sailing is supposed to be fun.... don't even feel you have to compete with the fishing boat, powerboat, PWC folks... god save us. Have fun...

showers and hurricanes

There are no finer showers in south Texas, than Corpus Christi marina. Also very secure.Island Moorings is so close to the gulf that you can walk to it.So for hurricanes....I don't know.Thay do have all concrete floating piers. It is a super nice marina with pool and bar/restaurant.but very expensive and so is electricity.the people are very friendly.Always action going on.I do like that.lots of crusiers with stories.but right now we are at CC marina. It is nice ,no pool, but fantastic skyline day or nite.it is one big giant entertainment district if you want.you can walk to it all, right from your boat.you can be in 14 ft of water as fast as you can back out of the dock.they also have all concrete floating.for my money I rank them the same on the hurricane scale.probably less debris coming at your boat in cc marina.our boat was in Ike in Seabrook.so we are now aware of just what damage debris alone can do.CC marina is also very secure...good luck

That channel is very narrow and a pain in Aransas Pass. It's also just a couple inches deep out of it so not much maneuvering room to avoid idiots in some places. We have a 5.6 foot draft. I'll try to make up my mind this week. We're headed back to Corpus now and I'll be out a lot on the boat. Corpus does seem about the best in a lot of wars for my wife since her office is so close and the places her co workers go are right across the street. Like the omni restaurant. That's a nice place. If we go over 15 days there though we're kinda screwed. Living on it I mean. I'll just have to take her out if we do. They don't allow 29 foot liveaboards there. 30 is ok!

I am from the Galveston Bay area but cruised through that area recently (have 4' draft). I found that the best anchorages were around Port Aransas and there were some questinable ones around Padre Island. You might be able to fit in the Packery Channel if you stay close to the ICW - I havent tried it, but lots of locals recomended it. My biggest complaint about Corpus Christi Bay is that it is rough and windy, so my biggest concern would be finding protection, but if that doesnt concern you, there should be plenty of deep water for you to anchor in the bay. Check out some charts of the area... Hook 'n Line makes a good fishing map that could be helpful.

If my wife and I could move our jobs to Corpus, we would be thrilled to plant our boat at CC Marina. We stayed in town for a weekend trip last year and loved it. It was certainly windy day and night which I found surprising for fall weather, but hanging out at the marina with a downtown skyline was great! The slip rates were lower than what I pay at Grapevine lake and the amenities there seemed to be pretty nice.
