Hole in vecinity of engine

I own a 1976 8.0C with an Atomic 4 engine. my boat has a hole with a tapered wooden plug on the fibeglass a few inches aft of where the carburetor is. not long ago I was looking at a restoration project of another 8.0C and noticed some sort of sensos where my hole is.

Does anyone have any idea what this is for?

it could be where the depth sounder transducer was originally ...mine was in about that same location ....i am sending my gages of to signet and have them checked out and if they turn out to be good i am going to keep them..and put a new transducer right back in that same hole ...

Thanks woodster. the thing is that this plug, when removed does not allow any water in the bilge.
