Been following this for some time.
These races are 'exciting', far from the boring-to-watch monos. This should help the declining sport of 'sailboats and racing'.
FWIW - Glad to see the helmets on the crews .... these boats maneuver, etc. so fast that head trauma opportunity is quite frequent. Ive been wearing a helmet on my 'race boat' for over 10 years after getting 'severely boomed'.

Finally, a use for my unused helmets after 40 years of riding and selling my last Harley. Now, all I need is another boat appropriate for racing. Real interesting post.
I've watched it from the start. As a former multi- sailor I can't say how stoked I was to see massive multihull monsters go at it for the 33rd Cup to bring it back home. That winged tri was phenomenal to see. This is the future of the Cup and will definitely bring sailing back into being a spectator sport. The AC45s are impressive, and watching the action in both Cascais and Plymouth was awesome.
I can't make it to San Diego in November to see them, but will probably take a trip up to Newport when they finally get there on the circuit. Just awe-inspiring...makes me miss my Nacra 5.2 sooo bad!

I'm on the other side of the fence. I stopped paying attention when Dennis Conner showed up with a catamaran to race a monohull decades ago. It turned me off to it entirely but I confess that I don't race either so there wasn't a whole lot of interest from me in the first place.
That's too bad..... this is completly different. It isn't one technology against another... It's duplicate, extremely hi technology catamarans competing.... the deciding factors are the skippers and crew and boat prepartation..... like one design.
There are many short match races in each regatta, the courses are close in and very spectator friendly. Besides the match racing, they also have a some fleet races when all nine boats compete at once.... very exciting to see a group of boats converging on a mark at 30 mph....
If you've ever watched the aussie 18 foot skiff Grand Prix circuit.... well this is almost as spectacular.
This is like a NASCAR series, or Formula 1.... completely different than two rich guys trying to win in the courtroom.
I watched it and enjoyed adult beveridges and good racing.....Here are some pics of My new-to Me 85 Mac 2-22.
Paid 1200 for it, I have been cleaning it up and assessing the situation.
I have a long list of mods, and minor repairs, and some glass work to do.
I have moved it inside for the winter. Sails, cushions, trailer, overall condition very good.
I do need a motor, and will have to build a new pop top enclosure.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up for me. I crewed on a quarter tonner for a single season in the early 70's. Interesting that at the BBQ following the race we lowly crew were packing in the burgers and downing the suds while the skippers spent their time arguing and filing protests. What fun, huh?
And for the record, F-1 and NASCAR don't do it for me either. Now, drag racing is another matter. Two cars side by side, 8000+ horsepower out of a 500 cubic inch engine, 300+ MPH in 1000 feet from a dead start. For those who haven't experienced it in person, TV doesn't do it justice.

Yeah, man, I love all that sh@##t. My brother-in-law spends so much time with his drag racing he never goes sailing with me any more. I really like going ou there with him.... but hey...I like all sports.
If you do happen to take a peek at it you'll see that they have been trying to make the event more exciting for spectators... from the race formats, the wonderful on board cameras and the cool telemetry overlaying the live racing. It's similar to how the NFL changed to the better with the superimposed scrimmage and 1st down lines, the cable riding cameras... etc. Really fun to watch.
