Winter too short in Maine!!! Gotta be kidding Kris. I lived in Maine for 6 years and what drove me out was winter beginning in early November and ending in late April. First year I launched my boat in May there was still ice on the shores. Seasons in Maine go like this: "...almost winter....winter....still winter....construction..."
People that don't enjoy it have a tough time here. We're transplanted Vermonters so winter on the coast of Maine are pretty easy. In fact it's too short for us as the snow on the coast comes late and leaves early.
The beauty of our sailing season here for me (and most of New England), is on the tail end. September and October. I've spent some good days in November as well. We usually come out in the beginning of November.
I'll agree with you on one season on the coast of Maine, spring is too long. I don't fight that either. I wouldn't even think of sailing in May here, and don't spend much time out there in June either. The water is simply too cold to allow much good weather.
This is my wife last winter on top of the Camden Snowbowl, our ski area in town. We're both skiers turned shredders. I just start getting comfortable on my tray when the season starts to end. With any luck, this is where I like to be in the spring.
