I have decided to buy a Sailboat for the California coast. I am planing on taking sailing lessons when i get back to California. I am interested in a mid to late 80s Catalina 34. My plan is to liveaboad in the Ventura harbor because i am only in the states 6 months out of the year. My question is Insurance, as I have no experience I am having a hard time finding an insurance agency to give me a quote. Are there any insurance company's that are forgiving enough to insure me with only 3 big boat sailing courses under my belt?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

In addition to my previous post I have sailed before and i understand that i am not going to go out on the water with out first taking lessons. I am buying a larger boat than what i think i might need because i would like to grow into it.

Don't know about the others on here but when I insured my boats, no one ever asked about my experience/courses, etc. BoatUS has some basic experience questions. Basically the questions focused on location of berth, areas you will be sailing, and whether or not the boat stays in the water year round.

Try BoatUS and I have used Ace and Foremost.

I just did a quote on a 1999 Catalina 34 to be berthed in Ventura with the least amount of experience choices:

The BoatUS quote did ask about driver's license and if you were involved in any vehicle or boat losses. The experience questions were general: How long boating (broken down to 0, 1-5, 5-10 etc.); what kind of classes (USCGAux, USPS, Other) and largest boat operated (0-18; 18-29; 30-36 i think was the breakdown).

Your marina will require certain minimum coverages and also adding them to the policy... make sure you understand those requirements when you request a quote. There is not normally a charge for adding the marina to the policy.

I was asked a few experience questions by Boat US.... but they never required verification.

Thank you for all the Info. I tried getting a Quote through boatUS and they sent me an e-mail reply explaining that i was too high risk for them to insure. I will try again, From what i can tell i might have to get creative. I have not bought a boat yet but i am looking forward to finding a boat that will take me anywhere i want to go. Any suggestions?

I had to add the marina, Trump Management and the State of NJ DEP to mine and a few companies wouldn't do it.

Also watch the year of the boat. My first was a 1979 and some companies won't insure older boats. Even though a 79 C30
isn't really that old in the grand scheme of things.

If your driving record is poor, credit score is low or you have little residency stability, you could be tough to insure. Try Progressive.

Looks like i am going to have to wait until i get back to the states and call every insurance company i can find. The marina i am going to be calling home does require $300,000 coverage as well as their name on the insurance. Anyone know any good brokers in southern California? I am new to large sailboats and dont want to buy a turd.

Fed up w/ personal attacks I'm done with SBO
I made the switch from Progressive to Auto Club earlier this year. 3 1/2 times the coverage at 1/3 the cost. They sent out one of their reps to 'inspect' the boat (very casual, filled out a 2 sided form on features and condition) and take photographs. Simple as that.

USAA as I recall does boat loans and insures through a subcontract to Progressive. USAA is a good company. SC

USAA will Underwrite Through Progessive

I am not sure about Progressive but you will want to make sure your policy covers salvage and environmental cleanup. Some "automobile" companies will write boat policies but do not cover salvage and envirnmental cleanup, you would end up paying for it were somthing to happen.

Check with the USAA website for contact info you could do this from where you are and not have to wait till you get back.

AAA x2

same here, we got a great price by adding our boat to our AAA auto and homeowners policy.....but I am going to look that policy over to be sure it covers all that we'd want if the worst happened.

Re: Brokers....If you are going to be in the Ventura area I could privately suggest who NOT to use.......in the DP area I know a few personally that I would expect to be very honest and helpful.
