Sink drain thruhull

SWMBO wants a sink, I am planning on having it drain overboard, maybe get a holding tank later, my question is where to locate the thruhull, at the waterline, above or below? Using a 1"marelon seacock, sink probably won't get a whole lot of use, washing hands and brushing teeth. Boat is 22' using a msd portapotty, so I can't tap into that.

Just below the waterline directly below the sink. Above the waterline and you would have stains from waste water running down the hull. Also it keeps bugs from the outlet.

And even if you had a head, rather than a PP, you wouldn't tie your sink drain into that. Ross is right.

Why not Stu? I have an 84 C25 and my head sink drain is teed into the raw water intake for the head. I believe Peggy often suggests this so the head can be flushed with freshwater to get rid of any microbes growing in the lines. It's also handy when winterizing because I can close the through hull and fill the sink with antifreeze and pump it into the bowl. This way ensuring the bowl is winterized not just the tank.

I know for his application your advice is spot on I just was wondering why Stu had said you wouldn't tie a sink drain into the head?

On my boat we don't use the head as often as we use the galley sink. What would I do with the grey water between flushes?

1. It's only for the last flush of the day, not for constant use. And only with CLEAN water with the thru hull closed.

2. Peggie also says shoving grime into the holding tank is one of the worst things you can do.

That's why.

Galley sink is different than head sink for last flush only.

And, as Ross says, you use the head a lot less than you use the sink.

Seems you may be unclear on the concept of teeing the head sink into the head intake.

But I've been wrong before...:)

Maybe I'm confused. On my boat my setup is as follows. I have one thru hull fitting under my v berth. Out of the top of the thru hull is a tee. One side of the tee goes to the raw water intake on my factory head the other side of the tee goes to my head sink drain. When under sail I open the thru hull allowing the sink to drain and also the head to draw in raw water to be flushed. When leaving the boat I close the thru hull and fill the sink with fresh water this allows me to pump the head drawing the water out of the sink, through the tee and into the head. Thus rinsing the bowl. Correct??

Captnken25, exactly the same as we have ours set up. We are odd though, because we can, we just always use fresh water for flushing. If we leave our slip over night/nights, we would use raw water but for the most part it all runs through the head sink.. We don't use that sink for much else though,so there is no toothpaste, soap etc, we wash at the galley sink and use hand sanitizer in the head.

I thought I had it set up correctly. So again I ask why (if he had a head instead of a porta potty) it would be inadvisable for Timo42 to tee off the intake for the head? It would stand to reason that one less thru hull would be better. I understand it's a moot point in this case because there is NO sink and NO head. I was just curious why, if there was an existing head it couldn't be teed into as discussed? It would be left open while on the boat to allow the sink to drain and for the head to be used. It really wouldn't matter which one you used more nor if you referred to the only sink on a venture 22 as the head sink or galley sink. (I'd probably just call it THE sink) if you were locating THE sink a great distance from the head or on an uphill run I could understand another thru hull but to me IF there was a head thru hull the easiest course of action would be to tee into that.
But I've been wrong before too :) lol

I have a galley sink in my MacGregor 22'. I use an old laundry soap plastic jug to collect the gray water. Then I pour it out when it gets full. It is a lot less of a problem than it would seem. I have a second jug for the clean water and a sink pump for the faucet. Works great and I have no holes below the water line.
