have a 1987 catalina 36....when i start the engine everything works fine...exhaust and water leave the transom like always....however when i leave to go sailing....and turn the engine off adn sail for 2-8 hours...when i enter the esturary i go to start the engine...engine starts okay but no water with the exhaust....i turn the engine off and on several times ... waiting 3-5 minutes between each restart...finally the exhaust/water mixture works and we return to port without further incident....i have replaced the water strainer....no big issues there....have looked at the impeller...it casing surrounding it had some calcification but we cleaned it up and the impeller looked fine...started the engine and everything worked fine...its just after sailing that the issue begins....heeling can be minimal or 10-15 degrees and same thing....am getting ready to have a tech look at it...but am looking at 300+ for the initial check...any ideas before i get seperated from my money....?

"Looks fine?" Replace the impeller and check to make sure your pump faceplate is smooth. If not, sand it down to flat, or buy a new one.

Also check all the hose clamps to make sure they're tight.

When was the last time you replaced the hoses?

we pulled the face plate off and got on hands and knees wtih a flashlight to check the impeller....there was no visible damage to any portion of the impller....cleaned the face plate before we tightened everything back down....no leaks...then we replaced teh water strainer.....when we restarted the engine no issues....its only after we go out sailing and restart it as we head back to alameda that we have the issue of no water coming through with the exhaust...but after a couple of starts then the water comes right out .... but will recheck the hoses as well....any other ideas would be great....

what you have discribed here ....sounds like you are loseing prim..

is your intake hose from the through hull a long one..

.check you water strainer and see if the water level is completley full after your sail and before you try to restart to come back in ...

you may have a hose clamp loose and not aware of it ...and as stu said ...

when was the last time you replaced your hoses...you may well have an abstruction in one of the hoses...

and though the impeller may look ok it may be getting older and stiffer ...pull it out of the pump and put a new one in and save the old one as a backup....

I had similar symptom in my old boat with a Volvo Penta deisel. Based on my experience I think Woodster has the potential answer with insuring there are no leaks in the hoses, clamps and the pump. Even a very small air leak can cause it to lose prime and make it difficult for even a good impeller and pump to pull in the raw water. The circuit needs to be airtight form the thru hull intake to the riser.

Also check to make sure the o ring/gasket in the strainer basket isn't the source of the leak.
