Floating mudballs in the Chesapeake Bay?

Sailed from Mobjack Bay up the York River yesterday, and saw several groups of cantaloupe-sized floating brown objects -- they look like mud or stone, but floating on top of the water. As many as 50-60 floating together. Anyone know what they are?

With the flooding they may have been cantalopes.

Sounds like crude oil. There's a big refinery on the south side of the York - could have come from there, or a tanker.

Maybe you found where all that BP spill oil went. Maybe someone with some serious bowel issues discharged their holding tank. One thing here that looks like that are the round floats used on crab traps that have been in the water so long they are covered with algae.

Power outages caused many a pumping station to shut down, thus allowing raw sewage into the Chesapeake watershed.
Might wanna stay clear of the "mud"balls...

Took this picture out my back door two days ago. The island moved east, up a lagoon, and back to the river heading west. We were going to lasso it, pull it to shore to increase my lot size but then realized here in NJ, that it would only increase my property taxes and cause the EPA to launch a full investigation.
