I have a 1986 Oday 222 with an aged and cracked rubber hose which encases the centerboard pennant and connects the pulley housing to the metal curved tubing up to the cockpit. I removed the clamps, couldn't loosen the hose by any means, and since the hose was coiled wire reinforced I couldn't cut and split it either. In attempting to pry off the hose I broke the PVC (?) pipe coming off of the pulley housing right where the dark grey, very hard, material was covering the pipe and housing. Using my dremel I ground away this hard material back around the pipe far enough so I could fit a new PVC coupling. I chemically cleaned the original pipe with alcohol, and using brand new PVC primer and PVC glue I attempted to fit the new coupling to the pipe. The glue didn't "take", altho it worked as normal on the joint of the new coupling and a piece of new PVC pipe extension out the other end. Maybe the original pipe isn't PVC after all. My thinking is that I will thoroughly clean around the existing pipe and hard grey material, slide on the coupling (with new PVC pipe glued and sticking out the other end of the coupling to attach the new hose to), coat epoxy to this area and then wrap the entire joint area with a couple of layers of 3" fiberglass cloth and epoxy - saturating the cloth with epoxy with each wrap, which will cover the hard gray material, existing pipe, and new coupling. I presume this will make a lasting and watertite connection. Has anyone else ever had this problem and how did you fix it ?? Am I on the right track ?? Thanks for any suggestions.
