Chances are that this guy never had to strengthen the core on the inside transom nor did he feel it was necessary as long as he could beef it up by using a piece of plywood for a back up plate.
One of our YC members did this to a 1974 O'Day 27 that originally had a two stroke Sail Drive engine with issues.
He mounted a regular two stroke outboard bracket on the transom for an 8 HP Johnson long shaft that he had. Of course a large four stroke outboard on a bracket built for four strokes can stove in a sailboat transom if the inner core is rotted and weak. This actually happened to at least one guy on this forum that I know of.
Someone over accelerated the outboard while it was in gear and the torque that it created stove the transom in, luckily above the waterline. Oddly enough the two stroke engine bracket came out unscathed.
I think that it all depends on the thickness of the transom and the condition of the core. If it is adequate, then you could get away with a plywood backup plate.
My friend also had an O'Day 25 keel/centerboard sloop and decided that the O'Day 27 was going to take a lot more money and work than he wanted to put into it so he sold the boat. He told me that the 27 was a fast boat and could out sail his O'Day 25.
I just changed the engine bracket on my boat the other day. A friend of mine gave me a bracket that is very similar to the one that came with my boat. It's only two years old and it appears stronger and more stable than my old bracket. If I ever need to buy a new four stroke outboard, I will definitely need to go with a heavy duty four stroke bracket and use a stronger and better back up plate that is inside the transom right now.
I would make sure that the transom on this boat is sound and there is a decent backup plate for the bracket. Also, some individuals have been known to cut corners and use regular steel bolts. As the old saying goes, "Let the buyer beware." You could tell pretty easy with a magnet. Good luck!
