The one that did not get away from Hurricane Irene

Have noticed several posts about the boat that unfortunately washed up on shore in Norfolk, Va during Hurricane Irene. Since I live so close, I decided to check it out in person this afternoon. I took several photos that some may find interesting as to what can become of a boat in hurricane conditions. I make no comments about why this boat came to be in such a situation. Posted for the info of those who may be interested.

Cheers,
Ken

I am actually a bit heartened by how well she fared once she took to the beach. It's a shame about the anchor gash though, without the sprit and rollers, it just sawed on through. I am curious if this will be a salvage or a scrap job.

So how do you remove a boat from a beach?......barge with a crane?.....drag it......or sawz-all

Those are some of the saddest sailing photos I've seen. Something about how normal everything looks, nothing exotic, old or amazing, just a Hunter, and any sailboat alone on its side is a terrible site. I can hardly imagine how broken hearted the owners are. What a very sad story and I am kind of ashamed at the number of people who took jabs at this misfortune. In many ways, there but for the grace of God...........
Good luck to them and Maybe Tomorrow.

PRAY

Maybe we can all pray for the owners and hope some how they get help getting her out into deep water and some place for repairs.

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I am guessing that they will take a crane onto the beach and lift the boat onto a flatbed trailer. They will have to deal with the rigging and what not.

I wonder what the insides look like. It would be interesting to hear what becomes of the boat.

I'll do my best to follow the fate of the boat and post results here when known.

If they put it on a trailer they have to remove the rigging any way... a crane on the beach could accomplish both rather easily... beach access for the trailer, tractor and crane would be the biggest obstacle.

It would be much cheaper to try and refloat her.... They might get some air bags under her and roll her back into the water, pulling with a towboat.

So Sad :(

It is so sad to see photo's like these. I am going to take a guess that the only reason she foundered was from the line getting wrapped around the prop shaft :(. That certainly speaks to a very good reason for having a cage around it.

It doesn't look as though there is any significant structural damage to her though. I see that it has been cordoned off. What is the status of her? being beached like that. Will the owners be given a length of time to remove her or is she open game for anyone to salvage??

Amen, Seadaddler. For whatever reason they got into this situation, they have learned a lesson the hard way and will be paying for it.

Makes me reconsider the BoatUS articles each season that discuss hauling on hard versus weathering storms in the water.

Looks like some smart action by the skipper is all that saved the rig from coming down. Forestay and furler are hanging to the side after being cut loose by the anchor chain. Looks like a halyard is attached to the bow pulpit rail, and another line tied to the port bow cleat. From the looks of it, those two lines are all that is stopping the mast from toppling aft.

What is really sad is that the owners, who live aboard, decided to leave Portsmouth and sail up to Annapolis late on Friday as Irene was coming instead of holding up in port and riding out the storm. There is no way they would have made it to Annapolis before the front edge of the storm. Most in this area spent Friday preping our boats. In fact they decided to anchor behind Willoughby Spit. The anchor did not hold and they ended up on the beach, with the Coast Guard and local rescue required to focus on someone who made a bad choice instead of someone who could not have avoided disaster. In any case they are in my prayers and I hope for the best of outcomes for their boat/home.

I still don't understand how so many boats remain unprepared. At least the canvas should have been removed. Same goes for the roller furling jib. The roller furling main should have been wrapped around the mast and tied off. A small, storm jib should have been in place in case of engine failure. Why are there so many sailors that continue to ignore the force of a storm.

Wow!!! How sad! Two things that really impressed me though was the chain sawing thru the fiberglass and how the clew of the mainsail was tattered so badly but the sail remained in the mast. They probably would have faired much better if they would not have fouled the prop with the line. It looked like it might have been part of the road or one of the foresail sheets, but hard to tell. Structurally she looks pretty good but there is no telling what it looks like under the sand. I would venture a guess that she is cracked from the weight (waves and boat weight). As mentioned above at least they came out of it alive and will sail again, much wiser I am certain. The boat however may not and that is a very sad thing. I did see a sailboat in Washington that was holed from rocks and was being repaired but that was a much smaller vessel.

BTW Thanks Island Girl for the pictures! I was wondering how she had faired and what it looked like on the beach. The waves drove her pretty far up.

we see a lot of cranes on barges, and extra barges to hold sunken boats, when hurricanes hit So Fla.

I would expect a crane on a barge to lift it out... unless there is good road access.

-usually there are a series of bad decisions that lead to something like this, not just one.
leaving port on Friday was probably the 1st one.

but at least its nothing money won't fix.... very glad they and the rescue team survived!

If it was insured I think they will write it off. Between the obvious damage and the sand and water inside it would probably cost more to fix than market value.

Insurance? Maybe not!

Something tells me that after reading the follow on story in the local paper about the owner today, there may not be any insurance involved. Who knows? Will continue to track the drama. Read this story and see if you can keep your jaw from dropping!
