Hi all;
The foredeck cleat on the port side of my Catalina 30 is loose, the screws turn but do not tighten, is there any way to get at the nuts below?

I have the same problem with the starboard cleat. I bought a round screw-in access port but have not installed it yet. My plan is to cut a hole in the side of the anchor locker to gain access to the base of the cleat and cover the hole with the access port. I plan to rebed the cleat and install a backing plate.

If anyone has a better idea I would be interested.

The issue with the majority of the fittings along the hull/deck joint is the cabin/hull liner getting in the way, although at least the nuts are visible inside the anchor locker on my boat. I found that a Dremel tool (pick your fitting, the small sanding drum seems to be popular) is a good way to grind away the glass liner to get better access to things like the outboard genoa track nuts, or nuts securing cleats, etc..

On my old boat, hull #511, I've noticed the aft cleats (tiny little 6" cleats too) have a minimal alum. looking piece of angle as a backing plate..Doesn't seem sufficient to me (& mine are loose) so I'll be making a larger backing plate when I replace the cleats with larger ones. I didn't notice a backing plate of any kind on the forward cleats.

Twice,
How are you pal?

I had the same issues on my boat. The bowsprit ripped out of the forepeak during a storm so I needed to redo the nose.

I cut a 1/4" thick piece of aluminum to match the underside of the anchor locker. In my case, i also cut side backup plates for the bowsprit side supports.

Had a good fiberglass guy come in and sandwhiched these in the new fiberglass buildup.

I did this along the top and down the sides, real thick. I reattached everything. This also kept the original hole locations for drilling thru. It's like a tank now.

CR, doing well..
Sounds like a good fix...my bow cleats are pretty sound...it is the stern cleats I'd like to replace with larger ones and they need a little reinforcing under the deck while I am at it.

Twice,

Again, I needed to do the same. I kept the same cleats but removed them. Once again I made some 1/4" backing plates. I cleaned the area and layered fiberglass matting & resin mixed with re-inforcing mud. (it's an additional "mill fiber", a powered cotton looking additive for tensile strength). This was the same strengthener I used for the nose.

I let it setup in my case 30 minutes (depending on your resin mix), mixed some epoxy and bedded in the backing plates. My transom will fall off before the cleats fail.

I's not that bad doing this, but you will be working blind for most of it, so cover protect the surrounding area.
Best of luck pal.........

Forward Cleats with Anchor Roller

This is what I did on the top side, I have large backing plates on the inside of the anchor locker - my 1977 Catalina 30 Hull 662 had easy access to the bottom of the cleats.

Hey Joe...

My Catalina is hull # 655...we're neighbors!!!!

I like your bow/anchor setup. Is this OEM or did you install after market?

Fixed the deck cleat, as per your suggestions, there are access plates installed both port and starboard, and the spare nuts and washers were onboard in the spare parts bin, neatly stowed in tiny ziplocks with the part numbers on them. Only took about 20 minutes.

Bow Anchro Rollers

Chris,

It is customer built. I had my father design it so I didn't have to drill any new holes in the boat. Then, we had it manufactured at a local metal fab place... I had the technical college "roll" it to the camber of the deck and tweaked it with 2X4's and huge "C" clamps.

It is one of my most favorite upgrades and that list is loooooong.
