Personally, I think good seamanship suggests using some of that good chain you've got and securing the boat in harbor! Going cruising? :naughty:

My plans had me in south Jersey, so we scratched that.

Wow! The last time I saw conditions like that was on a delivery from Annapolis to Puerto Rico via Bermuda. We hit stuff like that for two days on the Bermuda to PR leg.
Exciting to experience..... but only once please.

We certainly won't be off-shore sailing in that stuff. We'll probably anchor or moor around MDI and do some Island exploring. We have a mooring at Hinckley currently, delivered the boat last weekend, but SW Harbor is exposed to the East and can get lumpy. We were heading for Roque Island but I think that will be tabled until the weather plans weaken considerably.

The cool thing about ME is that there are plenty of routes, places and hurricane holes that we can poke into and still barely deal with swells, let alone open ocean..... The next day will probably be 5-10 knots and business as usual......

One man's gale is another man's fresh breeze.
Was in my first gale on the bay in my Catalina 30', reefed down and making god speed but it was not pleasant going. Out of the mist about 2 NM away we see what appears to be two large sailboats with full sails up and they are apparently racing as they are staying side by side. As we drew closer we realized it was a 4 master (>100') with every stich of sail up and just having a grand old time. folks on deck did not even have life vest on and where very casual about things.
I guess size does matter!

The latest NOAA has the Chesapeak Bay seeing a 0% chance of huricane force winds, a 5% chance of 50 knot winds and a 40% chance of storm force winds. The middle and upper bay have lower numbers. I'm thinking this is going to be a rain event and all we will really have to worry about is PEPCO shorting out the wind blowing the water around the bay causing both drying and flooding depending on which side of the bay you are on and when

Joan and I are headed to the boat on Friday and get off the dock. Going to one of our favorite holes, well protected... Fix a few drinks, eat some steak.... \
Everyone be careful..
