I have a 1989 Hunter 30 with a Yanmar 2GM20F engine; I have two questions:

1. What is the name and contact information for the highly respected LADY mechanic associated somewhere with a marina in California? She is very good at her work, well known and highly respected. If you do know of her, please share her contact information with me please.

2. I need to repack the stuffing box on my boat. I need to know which size of the PTFE Flax shaft packing materials to use e.g., 5/16", 1/4", 3/16". The diameter of the drive shaft is 1 inch. I can guess, or approximate and even try to measure; but, I really what to hear form someone who has a boat/engine similar to mine.

Are you thinking of Barbara Campbell in Oakland? Campbell Marine is the name of the company, IIRC, and she took over when her husband died several years ago.

i have a 2qm20h iun sd and i am with my poerki8ns 4-108 in mazatlan. i donot know of any yanmar mechanix who are ladies. a GOOD yannie guy is in sd named elias at pacwest, and is dealer/distributor. does great work.
the chandlery will sell the proper size stuffing when you tell them what yuou have and shaft size. i use san diego marine exchange and downwind marine and sailing supply. nice folks and all owned by same folks. discount given more than 4 percent. friendly and helpful. goood luck and smooth sailing.

Barbara owns Golden State Diesel. She is NOT a mechanic. She is out of commission as we speak due to heart surgery (from what I was told). The person that does her work is Bill Ingle of Bill's Marine. She may have some other contractors too.

Unfortunately, I am here in landlocked Oklahoma and unable to find a small engine repair mechanic with any real, consistant, reproducable experience.

Fortunately, I believe I don't have any significant engine issues. I really just want to be prepared for that day, should it occure. Rather now than in a panic!

I am unfamiliar with the abbreviations you use.
If you do know of a good diesel mechanic, please do the best you can to identify their name and location so that I might be able to find them with a google search, phone call or their equivelant.
I want to locate such a person before I really need them as I don't like to be forced by pressing necessity or panic.
Where I live the the closest mechanic is over 200 miles away. No one else around here has any real experience on small diesel engines.

pacwest industrial and marine services. ask for a man named ELIAS. i have a 2qm20h yanmar. he did the 600 hour overhaul. which abbreviations are you unfamiliar with--i only used the numbers on my engine, a yanmar, and the dealer/distributor in san diego is pacwest. look in the yellow pages for number as i no9 longer have it--i am in mazatlan. i used to be in san diego now my ericson is only part of me there. pacwest is your san diego option. unless you want inferior service and no factory support..

While I don't have the individual's name, there is an excellent Yanmar mechanic at Cedar Mills Marina on Lake Texoma-considerably closer to you than California. I have used these folks several times and find them to be highly skilled on Yarmar systems.

Can you be a little more specific as to how I might locate your "Bill's Marine." I used a google search and found Bill's Marine located in Oakland MD. --- Isn't that an interesting coincidence? And the only Bill's Marine in California I could find is in SanFrancisco---go figure???

You, your knowledge, and your experience is closer to my home here in OKC. Perhaps one day I will get a good lead on someone here that is fully capable.

The way things stand at the present time is that if I ever really need a mechanic, I will probably need to load up my thirty footer and rent the 350 pickup truck to pull it all down there. Of course, I am not much interested in that either. But I do appreciate your reply to my question. If I could only find one here in Oklahoma City ???

Truth be known, I really don't have any scruples about calling any mechanic with one good, simple question concerning diesel engine performance; I hope I need not be ashamed of that confession. I'd actually prefer to ask such a question on line here or of a diesel mechanic that stands a chance of receiving my business but they are vertually impossible to find in the OKC area. I wish I could find such a person locally.

When (and if) the time comes that I need a mechanic for my 18hp Yanmar 2GM20F diesel engine, I would really want the mechanic to come to her as she sets in the water and assess her condition their. I would hope to get her attended to without pulling her out, demasting her, hauling her to the mechanic, hauling her back home, etc.

2. You need 1/4-inch flax for 1-inch shaft. Be careful doing it in the water. Ask for help.

I am trying to maintain a viable network in the event I need expert advice. In such an event, it would be best if I had someone locally here that could actually come visit the boat as it sets in her berth.

I have only owned smaller, engineless vessels and I have no real workable knowledge of engines much less diesel engines. This is my first inboard powered boat.

I measured and determined that I needed 5/16” flax with my 1” shaft. But then of course that is precisely why I have posted here in the first place . . . I want to be certain that my measurements were proper. It still appears that there is a bit of discrepancy. I will be going back to the boat to measure once again. I would like to keep you posted regarding my re-measurement.

Yes, 1/4" flax should do nicely. I'll not attempt to explain how I could make such an error measuring. I still would believe the measurement had I not discovered the discrepancy by being able to insert only a 1/4" thick allen wrench between the shaft and the threads of the nut
