My 9.8 hp Tohatsu 4 stroke with the 25" ultra long shaft showed up today. She feels sooo shiny! I set her next to my 2.5 hp Yamaha 4 stroke. I am doing everything I can to keep Japan's economy afloat!

You will like that outboard, we sure do. We also then bought a 3 1/2 HP long shaft Tohatsu for the dinghy and so far love that outboard also.

The elect. start on the big one sure is nice and a big safety factor also. I switch out the 5 pitch 4 blade that came with it for a 7 pitch 4 blade since our boat is probably only 3500#-3800#. The part number on the 7 pitch if you are interested is 3B2B645120

After 3 months in Florida with it and over 300 miles on the outboard we like the 7 pitch, but to be honest never tried the 5 pitch. I think it would be great on a boat over 5000# to 6000#. The 7 has a lot of thrust in forward and reverse and I wanted a spare prop anyway so still carry the 5 pitch. I also bought an extra properller hardware kit, 3V1-87326-0, just in case I had to change a prop on the water and something went to the bottom.

I don't know if any of this will help, but it is easy to put a higher, longer tiller handle on it....

...... and extend the throttle....

...and gearshift...

.... plus I put a quick on-off connector between the rudder tiller and the outboard tiller....

Have fun with it,

Very good info Sumner. I think it is a very safe bet that my metal fab skills are far below yours.

Hey Sumner, do you know if those props will fit a 2008 Merc 4 cycle? Mercury apparently doesn't make extra props for the 4 HP anymore. I've been thinking the high thrust might get me to hull speed without being wide open.

I'd call onlineoutboards and ask them if this one would work:

......dia.........pitch.....blades..................................Tohatsu Part Number

......8.375 ....... 6 ......... 3
(high thrust) (6hp SailPro model) 399B645121

I know you probably know that Tohatsu makes the small Mercury outboards, but I think there are a few differences. The 4,5 and 6 HP are all the same outboard, just a different carb.

They are who we got our Tohatsu outboards from.

If you don't have luck there I know of a place that might be able to re-pitch the prop. I had a prop for our Honda 8 HP re-pitch. If I remeber right it was about $100 total for the prop and to have it pitched to a lower pitch. They did a nice job. I can't remember the name of the place off hand, but it is in our records,

Be sure to run the fuel out of the hose & engine after each use. The new fuel is crap and can screw up a motor.

Fuel stabilizer is also not a bad idea.
