This happened not a mile from my home and I no longer participate in Cowes Week or the Round the Island race because of the considerable risk to boat, life and limb.
It looked as if he had got away with it until the spinnaker hooked over the ship's anchor.
The MAIB (Marine Accident Investigation Branch) are looking into it. I wonder what they will conclude?

A sailing vessel shall keep out of the way of:

i. A vessel not under command;
ii. A vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver;
iii. A vessel engaged in fishing;
iv. A really huge vessel that can crush you like a bug.

Do you think both skippers were saying, "Don't worry, he'll move."?

I'm really pretty impressed at how the sailboat slid neatly under the bow. I'll bet they all had a wardrobe change after that!

There is no question that this is a simple case of "I thought I could slip past". The skipper misjudged the closing speed of the tanker. The skipper knows the rules, he just took a calculated risk and his math was off.
This is a perfect example of my fathers favorite quote...... "You cant legislate against stupidity". If the Colregs were tatooed to his eyelids the skipper still would have tried to cut across. I wonder how he would have felt if the boat went over and his crew were cut up by the screws of the tanker? Makes you wonder whats really important to some people.

I can't believe all the traffic in the area. What a zoo.

Have they stopped teaching the concept of "constant bearing"? Where in two objects on converging paths will collide if the bearing angle remains constant.

If you look closely at the video, you'll see the government mark and the fact that the ship was restricted by draft and also had a tow line from the back of the ship to a tug boat keeping the stern lined up and to help maneuvering. I San Francisco, all the competitors know that is is a disqualification if you cross within a certain distance in front of a ship since their forward visibility is restricted up to a mile. There is no doubt that the sailboat is at fault. By the looks of the collapsing spinnaker, the reaction was too late and the boat couldn't turn because the main was still sheeted in. Should have kept the chute trimmed and gone for max speed. Might have made it, maybe.

Makes us all look bad in the eyes of non-sailors the same as some idiot powerboater does to his responsible brethren.

Pride goeth before the fall. Scoreboard at the Rome Colluseum. Lions 5, Christians 0. Were sailing out of Oxnard Ca one afternoon and sailed across the bow of an anchored tanker. Started hearing bells and the anchor chain started rising. Cleared in plenty of time. Wouldn't cross bow of one that was moving. Their brakes aren't very good. Cal coastline is a very crowded place. Dinosaurs had their sex organs in their feet because if one of them stepped on you, you were F.....d. Fair Winds and Full Sails...

At some (not all) of our races, the PRO reads the riot act to the racers that you are not to mess with tankers or USCG boats, and if you do, it is grounds for a DSQ. We have a charity regatta coming up, and the course is in the main ship channel. I am sure we're gonna get "The talk" at the skippers meeting.

Are you saying they actually won the Darwin or are you nominating. I would second the nomination. It looks from the video that the skipper was going to stay the course at "all" costs. There is no substitute for discretion and common sense, although common sense is listed in my Oxymoron dictionary along with military intelligence and congressional ethics. Fair winds and full sails...
