several maintenance/repair questions

have a few questions, thought one post better than several; apologies if some very simple:

1. glow plug:
- all of sudden not working; where to start to find out problem? (universal 18)

2. transmission:
- even if certain in neutral after stopping. next time starting always seems to slip very easily into forward; hard to make sure in neutral. anything to correct?

3. sulfur odor:
- successfully replaced fresh water pump this weekend. now the tanks have horrible odor after sitting for awhile. mechanic at the yard suggested small amount of bleach to flush through. best idea?

4. zinc:
- in the spring "assuming" were replaced. however when checking how do i know when to replace?

5. muffler (assuming that's it):
- none of the holding screws for the muffler are in place; need to look closer however feeling underneath the holes, doesn't appear to be anything to set the screw into (not sure if that make sense). anyway the muffler rattles quite a lot.

6. vent hoze:
- is this supposed to be connected to anything?

1. Check electrical connection to glow plug switch on panel and also to the plugs themselves.

2. Check the cable adjustment at hte shift lever on the Hurth transmission.

3. Bleach/water mixture will help. I think it is one cup bleach per gallon of water. fill tank. Let sit overnight and empty. flush with fresh water and then some white vinegar to get rid of bleach smell/taste.

4. Shaft zinc will either fall off or be almost gone. Keep an eye on them especially if you are at a slip. HE zinc will degrade over time. Raw water will leak out when checking. Keep a spare on board.

5. Some have corners with screw holes. Yours may have broken off. You may need a new muffler.

6. Need more info. Is the other end attached to anything?

The photo is small and hard to see.

Fresh water system recommission instructions

A cup of bleach to a gallon of water is WAAAY too much! The correct ratio is 1 qt (4 cups) to 50 gallons of water.

I've posted the instructions for recommissioning the fresh water system a number of times...do a search for "fresh water maintenance" or "recommission fresh water system." If you can't find it, I'll post again.

All the other stuff you listed suggests that the toilet, tank and related plumbing needs some help too. You'll find all kinds of good (and bad) information in the discussions in the Head Mistress forum...and I'm here to answer questions too.

Peggy ... is there any way you can put the instructions in a "sticky" post? If you do a search on the phrase you recommend, what you come up with are the myriad of threads where you tell people to do a search on " .... " (including this thread)

Your instructions ARE GREAT though ... I used them at the beginning of the season and cleared my problem right up!

glow plug button

when i push in the glow plug button doesn't appear to do anything (don't hear anything and the oil pressure (?) beep does not stop. however although not as quickly as when the button did occur to work the engine still starts fine.

not sure what to check?

Well dlewis what do you expect to happen? All it does is draw current from the batteries and get hot.

Glow Plugs
Put a meter on the plug and see what you get when you hit the button. Follow the wire from the plug and check all connections and possible fuses. Start with simple is my opinion.

I think that engine has a relay that controls the glow plugs.. As NY Sail says, look at connections and wires and relay and button for function.. Happy Hunting ..

Older Universal engines didn't come with glow plug solenoids. The darn circuit ran all the way to the engine control panel and back! :eek:

We installed a glow plug solenoid and reduced the glow plug hold time from 30 seconds to 10 to 15. An easy fix, and better for your wiring.
