Ontario on the Lake was, of course, a screw up from a guy who goes to Niagara on the Lake regularly.

Winkfish: Seas were running 3 to 4 feet, so I could not get too close, but I pointed west and said Olcott is 12 miles that way. Then I pointed east and said Oak Orchard is 12 miles that way.

Years ago we put a guy from our shop in a van to run parts to a customer in North Carolina. We told him to get on I-95 and just keep driving until you see "XYZ" exit and drew him a map of how to get to the plant from the exit -- pre-MapQuest days -- we were in New Jersey.

10 hours later we get a call

"I think I missed the exit"

"Where are you now?"

"Maine"

"What? Where? Huh? How did you get to Maine????"

"Well I'm going to North Carolina, so I got on 95 and drove north but I think I missed the exit." He was actually annoyed with us for asking

The shop guys glued a compass to the top of his hard hat and he still hadn't lived it down when I left three years later. He worked in the paint booth. Maybe the fumes...

Chances are very good that the man can't read. I had a brillant man working for me and I learned after about two years that he looked at spanish and english with the same lack of comprehension. He couldn't read street signs or road maps or much of anything else. but he was a high school graduate.

Worked in a pizza place in Cincinnati when I was a kid. We were no where near an interstate. One night at about midnight this foreign guy bursts into the door, carrying an atlas. He runs over to the counter and shouts to me, "How I get to Virginia!" So, three of us high schoolers put our heads together and routed him to his destination, the most direct we could figure, without taking the obvious opportunity to send him Missouri.

He didn't even bother to order anything.
