Jim, there was a group of Hunter owners that used to be known as the Outer Banks Hunter Sailors Association, but there has not been any activity by the group for several years. Crazy Dave Condon was involved and may have more information. As I understood it the group was at one point some 29 or so members strong, held rendezvous and cruise-ins at various Inner and Outer Banks ports of call.

I love visiting Oriental but I need more going on. Have you thought about Charleston? Great sailing scene (Charleston Race Week). Astounding restaurant scene. Lots going on. No draft problem. Housing not expensive if you don't mind being a couple of miles out of the city.

My boat draws 5'7". I was in Sea Harbour Marina in Oriental for a couple years and the entrance to the creek often silts in and needs dredging. No way a 7 foot draft would get through. Most boats in the NC area are shoal draft in the 4 foot to 5 foot range. I believe max depth at Mathews is 5 feet.
There is a hunter dealer off route 64 between Rocky Mount and Raleigh and they may provide info relative to an owners group in NC. Certainly a lot of hunters around.

Crazy Dave is out of business now...retired I think. I have just joined the East Carolina Sailors group. I see you are in Bridgeton...I grew up in New Bern and still have family there.
Sea Harbour has recently been dredged and the channel is in good shape, but, as you probably know, when the winds blow the water out of Pierce Creek it gets trickey. With those winds there are spots near the marina itself that will be just a tad over 5 feet, but that won't help a 7' draft.
Wouldn't go anywhere near New Bern. Mosquitos fight the black flies for territory on your arms, there's snakes on the docks, even heard alligators come up that far. Why even the sharks bite small children.
Actually, we were in New Bern last week looking at property. If (a big IF) we can sell our house
,and a job offer for the wife, we will be moving to the area. Seems like we could start the southern caucus of SBO there.

I guess my concern is the channel was just dredged about 4 years ago and now you note it had to be done recently again. So it fills in pretty fast. Less than 5 foot draft is recommended although the marina is marvelous, well protected, great facilities, and great people. Lots of fun on work days.
I was also going to mention Oriental NC. Specifically Whittaker Point Marina. Admittedly I am a trailer sailor and don't have the experience to make an informed recommendation but from what I saw when I spent a week at Whittaker Point... it is a great place with great people and Oriental is a nice little town.
