Throttle cable replacement

I need to replace the throttle cable on our '84 Hunter 31. Do I need to drop the pan in the aft quater birth to do this? Are there any tricks that will make the job easier? Any help would be great. Bert

You will need to drop the pan. There is also a screw that holds a bracket that secures the cable to the pedestal housing. You will need to loosen this screw to remove the cable and then you need to get the new cable secured again upon replacement.

Best of luck, this is not a job for the faint of heart! You just need patience.

I scoped this out briefly. On my 86 31, the cable comes down through the pedestal, exits starboard through the wall between the aft berth and starboard locker, into the starboard locker where it takes a wide sweep in that locker so as not to kink the cable, and comes back into the engine compartment. I was wondering if there might be more direct route for the cable and perhaps some other added pedestal wiring. Might exit forward out of the pan through a grommet on the berth side of the wall, along the top of the wall in teak or white channel. and into the engine compartment. That might eliminate some of the cable that is always fouling stuff in the locker. Is the pan secured with adhesive or caulk?

I also wonder if either of you know whether the topmost [the one closest to the lever] metal outer segment of the throttle cable, about 4-5 inches of narrow tubing, in which the actual cable slides, is somehow crimped or pressed into the part of the cable immediately below it, or if it is supposed to move freely [very unlikely].

Beach, did your pedestal have both gear and fuel legs?

There are the obvious screws that hold the pan in place. Originally there was a bead of caulk around the pan. I never recaulked after removing it the first time.

If you have the pan off, I would suggest that you adjust the steering cables. If you have an auto pilot it works much better once these cables are tightened up.
