Yeah it just seems over kill for a day sailor in the bay to have jack lines and tether. But i will be more careful with the auto pilot.
Especially if you use the auto pilot, you should be clipped on.....
You don't need to rig jacklines.... just clip on to a solid point on the windward side of the boat. The shrouds are good if you have to go to the mast to reef. I never rig jacklines unless I'm on a trip. I just have secure points around the boat that allow me to leave the cockpit if I have to.... I always stay clipped on in the cockpit too.... to a windward padeye or jib car....

Let me ask you this.... if you're on a day sail, out in the middle of the lake a couple miles from shore with no other boats in sight... would you rather be floating in the cold water in your pfd trying to swim after the boat.... or would you rather be on the boat?

Like PFD's......... a harness and tether is useless unless you're wearing it.

Someone once told me I should have a foot of boat for every year of age...

Ha, ha........ only a boat salesman would use that line. Can someone find me a 65 footer for under 20k so I won't embarrass myself.

Thank you, Joe. I have been wondering how to ask about that. I am older, 67, not as sure footed as I once was, but didn't want to seem like a woos.....

Coastie your still fairly young. Everyone no matter of age uses tricks, tecniques, or hardware to make life easier. No shame in that. I don't know where you are located but sailing squadrons are friendly places and people with very varied experience levels that would br happy to show the pros and cons. All the best.

Joe - i will way your advice. It is pretty darn hot in fl. I may trade the pfd for a harness. Not as hot.

Exactly, the harness is my first priority.... I never even had an inflatable pfd until a year or two back.... but the harness and tether was one of my first purchases. They not hot or uncomfortable. The priority is always staying attached to the boat. Trust me... purchasing a harness and a tether with quick release shackle will be the sanest investment you'll ever make. You can always throw a PFD over it. Here's a good one on Amazon.com for $60..

This basic tether is about $59:
