1 crab potters are rampant in west florida. The pots are not just in the channels. You have to watch for then anywhere.
2 blaring radios in the marina or out on the water. Some of us like to hear only the sails and water on the hull.
3. Way to many power sailing or never even bothing to put the sails up.
4 to the people with the sailtime boat that anchored in the channel off of bahia beat so the kids could swim . Not an anchorage guys.
5 my number one beef. If you see dock lines laying there it is a good indicayion they belong to someone. Don't steal my slip so you can eat lunch. Happened twice.
6. Would rather have the dock lines on the dock the in the water flating in my slip when i come in. I really don't want them wrapped on my prop.

Generally stop and think.

Stink Potters who stay on a Dead Wreckoning course - at me. They don't change course until the last second. I never know if I am going to be dead or wrecked!

Didn't hear anything about Sandy Hook. Everyone make out OK?? The one time I sailed there it was rather interesting!
I know it's a bit north of you but I figured how many power boats capsized off NJ on Sunday and the people were pulled out by a passing sailboat?

As for details, all I got was that it was some sort of small power boat at least 5 miles offshore, and they capsized. A nearby vessel which I thought I heard referred to as a sailboat picked the people up. At that time they got started talking on cell phones so I didn't hear any more details. There was a bit more in the middle of the conversation that I never picked up as there were so many boats making security calls in the area that were walking all over 16 the CG was having trouble finding moments of clear airwaves, and as I was quite a bit north of them going through Hell Gate, I was picking up quite a bit of Long Island Sound traffic too. In the end I only heard about 25% of the CG side, and never heard the other side of the conversation.

quick search on Google turned up nothing about the incident either...

- How about the idiot in the brand new 50+' blue oversized Formula with a cabin heading straight across a shoal between peaks island and Littlejohn Island at low tide. I wave him off and at the last minute realises that the red buoy close to Littlejohn island needs to be passwed to stbd(between the island and the mark). He then slows to half speed and throws the biggest wake he can at me as he passes within 50 ft. with no show of appreciation for saving his a$$. Next time I let him plow his new toy right up on the rocks. Although I would call the CG.... to ensure they fine him for the loss of fuel.

- Big wakes and speeding power boats that like to play chicken with you.

- Day schooners thinking they can ignore the colregs. Actually had one take out a mast on a friends boat last year.

- Loud music in the marina after "quiet" hours.

- Transients that don't clean up after their children/dogs/guests/etc.

- Empty Miller lite cans in my dink. No, it is not a floating trashcan nor could it be confused for one. Never knew a sailor to drink that swill.

- CG buoy tender that came through the race last week blowing it's horn and plowing a swath right through the fleet with plenty of water to go either side of the channel. One of our racers is CG and he said it was a trainee who did not know any better. He was quite embarrassed to be associated with the CG that night.

- Fireworks on any day other than the 4th. My dog hates fireworks.

- Mega transients who take 3 or 4 of the dock carts and park them next to their mega-crap-boats.

I could go on all day.

BTW, I leave my dock line on the dock....neatly coiled or laid along the length.

Spent the night July 2nd at Captains Cove in Blackrock CT, with a CG buoy tender tied up right behind me at the transient pier, they ran their generator all night long. I asked one of them if they were going to turn it off, they told me that they can't, because the batteries would be dead in the morning, and they need 440v shore power which wasn't available. Mind you they are pumping about 20gal/minute overboard through half a dozen thruhulls for all the AC and fridges that they were running. I'm sure if they turned them off they wouldn't have any dead battery problems. The dock master and I had a nice chat in the morning, and he won't be putting them at the transient pier next time they come by... He was very apologetic for us having to listen to their genset all night, and felt it very rude they kept it running for their AC at the expense of everyone else around them.

BTW, I leave my docklines on the dock, but try to toss them fairly straight so they aren't in the way.

Also like to add to the list, dock-mates that tie their spring lines across the dock on your stern line cleat, over top of your stern line.

Plenty of sailboaters seem to have their heads up the rear-ends as well some times - Its just that most powerboaters are able to move a lot faster and get themselves into trouble lot quicker.
Amen. :cussing:

I was out daysailing both Saturday and Sunday (very rare for me. The Gods were smiling upon me). On Saturday, the usual wash from the big stinkpots. On Sunday, I was overtaken to windward by a 40' sailboat, both of us under sail, port beam reach, and I had to yield to avoid the collision. Might (or $$$) makes right, I guess.

In considerate boaters, swabbie and stink-potter alike. We were three miles out. close hauled on a port tack. This . . .boat, had to be 40 feet, huge diesel belching stink. Some guy with sparkley teeth, a tiny speedo and a Martini in one hand , steering from the 3rd or 4th deck, plows in front of us, may be 100 feet off our bow. I had to turn into his wake so we didn't roll. Did I mention we were three miles out.
Oh, that was you? It wasn't a martini, it was a chocolate, cherry, raspberry, apple-tini...and coke. Shaken, not stirred of course. I'm pretty sure there's some booze in it somewhere.

Sometimes, you just get into situations where you might have done it differently or can't understand why the other guy is so angry. About 5-6 years ago, I was heading out into the lake here. From the bayou that I entered from, there is a large concrete breakwater and about 100' or so wide entrance. There were lots of boats out but none near the entrance that day. I decided to sail out. I was always told while under sail and passing something like a concrete pillar to pass on the leeward side just in case of trouble, the wind wouldn't push you into it. So I was heading out under sail and fairly close to the breakwater on my port side. Another sailboat, under power comes motoring in and is berating me as he passes for passing him on his starboard side. He was making hand gestures and instructing me that I should pass on the other side. I just waved yelled "starboard" as he was mouthing something that looked vulgar. If I had known his intentions to enter the channel, I would have moved to the other side but by the time he turned in, it wasn't practical or safe to make the change. Maybe he didn't like my speedo.

Does not sound like you were on starboard tack but you were under sail and he was not. Generally when passing through ares like that it is port to port unless the description was tough for me to understand.....

So far my biggest peeve:

These kids in ski boats. They have these big bars that go over the top of the boat, for wakeboarding I think. These overhead bars are filled with speakers. They like to point them at me and blast some absolutely horrid, offensive rap music filled with hate and cursing. It carries a long way and is completely disruptive to my peace and quiet or my music playing at a reasonable level. Sometimes they're easily 1/4 mile away, and that crap is so friggan loud. It carries easily across the lake. These jerks have no consideration for anyone else using the lake and seem to feel it's their duty to provide music for everyone, whether you want to hear it or not.

Clueless jetskiers

We were booming along on a beam reach at 6 kts, a mile off shore. It was such a nice day that my wife decided to rig up her casting rod and troll a surface lure. Three hooks with wire leaders off a 30 lb test line. Rod resting peacefully in the sternrail mounted rod holder while we cruised along listening to Buffett tunes. Two jet skiers (probably rentals from the shoreside luxury resort we were passing) come tearing across our stern. The first one, female, crosses approx 30 yards behind us. She suddenly stops dead in the water and starts clawing at her face frantically, as my wife's pole starts flexing. My wife gets up to start reeling in her line, when jet skier number two roars down our port side waving like we should be happy to see him, and then cuts behind us. Next thing we hear is the zzziiiiiiiinnnnnngggggg of the line running off my wife's reel, and number two is now dead in the water pawing at his face and legs.

No idea where the hooks ended up. The noise finally stopped once they stripped all the line from the reel and the line parted. I sure hope they learned something.

You're a regular smart * aren't you? :D (Where's the the "Like" button...)

Here's my contribution to the list:

1. People who don't understand that "No Wake Zone" inside the marina means just that - NO WAKE"!

2. Guys who are wrestling with each other on the dock, trying to throw each other into the water (in the marina, no less!), and manage to do so 4 feet from your bowthruster right when you are approaching your dock with a wind on the beam blowing you away from the dock, so you can't use the bowthruster for fear of sucking their sorry * into it...

3. Any kind of boat that pulls across in front of you inside the marina, when you are trying to navigage your way through with limited maneuverability in a confined space with crosswinds to deal with and a limited channel, and then want to stop right in front of you to protect their place in line at the gas dock. I sincerely believe that most boaters (present company excepted, of course!) simply have no concept of the challenges of keeping 78,000 pounds of vessel out of trouble in a confined marina, and that you really do need to keep way on in order to not get blown into a dock or someone else's boat or in the channel so you don't end up in a position that puts you at risk with no real options to get out of. You would think they would see a larger vessel coming and it would occur to them to just stay out of the way for a few moments to let it maneuver. Rarely happens... I really try not to have the GTR attitude (Gross Tonnage Rules), but where they heck do they think you are going to go

Darwin must not have been right, because there seem to be way too many of them who have survived thus far...

4. Spiders

5. Sea Gulls (is it really not legal to shoot them - I think they should pay a bounty for their heads)

6. People who let plastic bags blow off into the water.

7. People who let their shore power cables hang down in the water.

For me it seems to always come down to noise. I have a really, really loud job and I really enjoy the quiet of sail.

We don't have a lot of great areas to anchor out for the night on Galveston Bay, but my local spot, where I'm usually alone on the weekdays isn't too bad. I can't tell you how many times another boat shows up when I'm the only guy there at about 10 to midnight, anchors right next to me and fires up the generator to run the A/C.

Now, don't get me wrong, if I had it I would probably use it too, but when you could anchor a half mile downwind of me with no problems why pull in next to me?

I also try to not force other people to listen to my taste in music. I understand some folks fascination with loud music, but to force everyone to listen to what you want to listen to just seems rude to me.

Oh, and we have four foot wide floating docks and I know my neighbors, but I single hand a lot and I'm sure I've tossed a dock line or two over the dock over the years. I don't have crew to coil them nicely for me when I pull out of the slip. When they are gone I usually will move their lines a bit if I'm going to be laying on the dock waxing the boat or something and I'd assume they would do the same with mine. I certainly wouldn't toss my lines over theirs though.

Right in front of my house is an intersection, three way with a stop sign on only one way. Everynight some apparently deaf person comes booming down the road through over a mile of quiet farmland to the intersection....

Such good lists going here, but you’ve missed a few:

1. Stand up paddle boarders. I feel badly listing them, they are trying to get fit and it they don't make any noise......but man are they clueless some of them! They either don't look around at all, and assume everyone will make their way around them or they look right at us and cross our bow........ or they move into range of our bow with a small kid following them!!

2. Sailboat owners that don't tighten their halyards and let them clank day and night. A new fellow moved in a couple weeks ago........ he and grown sons were up and down the dock with not a glance our way, no hello’s. Seemed like they were attempting to look like they knew what they were doing. It dawned on all of us that this old rather decrepit boat was new to them and they had no idea what to do with anything. We kept looking up at the clanging line on the mast but they never even got up to check it. (I would have chatted with them about it but I tend to get myself in trouble so I decided to let someone else be the bad guy). Finally they left and 30 minutes later, 3 people got those lines quiet and next time we were down, they were all tightened down. But he now eyes me !!! Guess I should have just gone ahead and said something…….he thinks it’s me anyway!!

3. The know- it-all Sailor. Twice, on our way to a pump out station, motoring with our main still tied, we've had sailboats yell to us that we need to sail our boat!!!! Thanks for your help fellas, we hadn't thought of that!

4. Recycling dumped in the trash… There are 3 large cans, 1 Recycle and 2 Trash……. It should be the opposite (though I am thankful that our marina does make the attempt). How hard is it to put the plastic jug, cardboard boxes, beer cans, bottle IN THE RECYCLE can.

I feel better.

Me and the local race committee have an understanding. If they choose to place their buoys at three farthest corners of the lake and expect everyone to stay out, I will strive to disappoint. Seriously, do they expect all non-racers to hug the rocks on the shoreline while they scream and yell at each other.
Most areas require boats that are racing to display some sort of penant, usually a streamer off the backstay or mast end. You have absolutely no obligation to stay outside of the race course as long as you don't interfere, broad interpretation, with the boats in the race. I went to the Harbor Master once when an irate "racer" threw an empty whiskey bottle at me spreading broken glass all over our boat. I got his boat name and registration #'s and he was later cited and banned by his YC from racing for one year. The water is not a private country club for efite snobs. Also in regards to powerboats, I see kids who aren't old enough to get a drivers license steering boats with 454 chevy's towing parents on skis. Ya have to have a license to drive a car, Ya have to have a license to get married, Ya have to have a license to go fishing, Ya have to have a license to fly a plane. You don't need a license to smash into somebody in a boat. Ya can't fix stupid. Fair Winds and Full Sails....

Saw a "boater" who decided to eat lunch in a slip at MDR CA once. Turned out it belonged to a 12 meter. 12 meters don't have engines. They sailed into the slip. 12 meter one, little boat -0-. Ouch.

* Boats with large genoas and no effective lookout to leeward PARTICULARLY on port tack. I've had a few close calls over the years. If you can't keep a leeward watch, stay home.
* Sailors and power boaters that drop anchor (literally) and leave, without setting or watching for a short time, to observe dragging and swing.

We had this guy in our yacht club, nice guy with more money than brains. So one day we are down in St Mary's Maryland and to move up the channel to where we were you need to wind around a sand bar as the channel snakes around. So we are watching Bruce come straight at us, run aground on the sand bar, give it full throttle and dredge his way through. Did not even give it a thought when we mentioned and pointed out the channel at the dock. Really nice 36' power boat too; life is good when you own a business that sell ice machines.
