Baby stay locations:deck vs side stays

Dear Macgregor Owners,

I have mounted the baby stays on the mast 5 ft from the base as recommended. For placement of lower baby stay attachments: Should I attach the baby stays on deck with eye bolts or attach the stays to the side stays? Are either way acceptable in this engineering feat? I do not want to interfere in the functions of the jib control for port and starboard sides, nor the functions of the side stays.
Your advice is always appreciated.

The baby stays must be straight across from the mounting point of the mast so they will take the side load from the biginning movement of the mast untill the side stays take over at about 80 degrees.

If you mount them at the same place as the side stays they will become to tight before the mast is raised all the way.

Mine are mounted about 24 inches from the mast.

At what point due you measure the distance from the mounting support for the mast? In the center of mast mounting bracket or on the side of the mast mounting bracket ?

Here you can see the tie down attached to the pad eye and the exact measurement is 21 inches from the side plate on the tabernackle to the pad eye hoop. You can also see the alignment with the bolt on the mast and the dodad that the gin pole mounts to .

thank you for sharing photos of baby stays. Can I use stainless steel eye bolts or is it better to use pad eyes?

The pad eyes might be a little lower and less to trip on and have two bolts instead of just one.
