I bought Lewmar 30 STs to mount closer to the helm position to make single-handing easier. To get the proper 5-10 degrees angle leading up to the winches, I either need to mount a leading block from the toerail or a stanchion base. I've searched the archives, but can't seem to find out how the hull/deck joint is constructed. I can't get at the backing because of a hard headliner. I don't think a stanchion would take the high forces a 135% genoa would load it with, and since I can't get to the back of the joint to use reinforcing plated below the deck, I'm stumped. There is room to reach the area under the coaming to use reinforcing plates under the winch. Any suggestions? Thanks.
O'Day 32' CC hull/deck joint

One of my friends once owned an O'Day 32 but I never had the chance to check the interior of it so I'm really not all that familiar with this boat. When I can't get at deck hardware I just cut in a deck plate. In fact I recently installed a 4" Beckson Deck plate in my fuel locker to gain access to a horn type jam cleat that I recently installed on the combing near my stern rail for my roller furler control line. It also allows access to the stern cleat which I never had.
My friend Wayne used HDPE for a deck plate to gain access to the inner transom on his Seaward 22. All I can tell you is, if you can't get access, just cut a hole and make it. Nothing is more important than being able to single hand your boat regardless of size.
I would also look into installing a large open clam cleat behind each winch to snub off your Gennie sheets. Wayne tried mine and he added them to his boat. My friend Ray also installed these jam cleats on his O'Day 26 and he loves them. All you have to do is take three wraps around the winch trim the sail, and place the sheet in the clam cleat. It doesn't get any easier than that.

On my 32' CC...
... the non-self-tailing winches are at the forward edge of the coaming, and my boat is wheel steering, so reaching the winches from the helm is not practical. I bought the Lewmar 30STs to mount the winches on the coamings abeam of the pedestal. there are two cleats per side, one is about where I want the winch to mount. I can get to the underside of the coaming, but not the toe rail. The tracks are also on the coamings and the block height (about 4" height from the track) won't allow the sheets to be lead up at an angle to prevent overwrap, unless I put the winches on pads at least 6-8" tall, which seems unsafe. My hope was to mount a block at about toerail level, or if necessary, onto the bottom of the stanchions, which seems to me to put too much stress on the stanchion, and as I can't tell how the stanchions are mounted. Believe me, if there was someplace to put an access plate, I would in a heartbeat,but the inner surface below the winch is behind my fresh water tank, which removing would be a job I would not relish. I will keep all suggestions in mind while figuring out how to mount. I'll also take some pics when I get down to the boat this afternoon. Thanks for the input.
