What is best way to winterize a hot water heater with both hot and cold inlet and outlet at top of water heater. Do not see a lower place to remove water. It was installed at factory. It is a 6 gallon size. Are there others that have easy drain capability.

Raritan makes a nice 6 gallon water heater with the inlet at the bottom.

Drain it and by-pass it.

There has to be a drain petcock somewhere...if you can come up with the brand/age of the water heater, we can prob'ly find the manual for it online.

We use the hot water heater during sailing season in Kansas. There is nothing low on the tank all in and out high within 2-3 inches of top of tank. Will check this weekend for brand.

Here's a picture of a Seaward 6 gal water heater which Hunter used on many boats. I've drawn in a red arrow for the location of the drain valve.

Ours is round. Pop off valve on side near top. Need to get out to boat. I looked once and did not see brand. Will look again.

Do not mistake a "pop off" valve (pressure relief valve) for a drain valve. The drain valve will always be at the bottom of the water heating vessel.

It would help to have the name of the manufacturer, model number for sure and you can locate an owners manual very easy. My input is this. I have an identical hot water heater just like the one Alan has shown in this thread. My heater did not have a drain valve on it. Mine had a round plastic like plug with a metal cover and threads for a very small square headed screw. I contacted Seaward with my delimia, and was told it should have had a valve on it and did not know what the plug was in my heater. Even checked with their Engineering department, no ideas. They did however send me a drain valve at no charge. In previous years I disconnected the water line after the pump, before the heater inlet valve, and with all the outlets open, I use an air compressor and push the water out of the entire system. I was very lucky one day picking up parts for my auto repair business and found a very small threaded on/off valve that just happened to fit the threads in my hot water heater. Alas, now I can drain it into the bildge with a hose attachment. Hope this helps. Someone on this web site will have the answer you are looking for. Good luck.
