After much delay due to weather I've finally gotten the painting started. I'll be doing the waterline to gunwhales first then the fore and aft sections of the bottom complete then get her onto a cradle to finish the bottom off.

The weather was good today so got both primer coats on today and hope to have the Brightside finished by Wed night if the weather holds out. Then 3 days doing fore and aft epoxy primer and 2 days for the hard anti fouling fore and aft before getting her onto a cradle to finish off the bottom.

Me too! I've been waiting for the weather to break. I finally gulped and painted yesterday. It was overcast, chance of fog and slight chance of rain. It looks pretty good but I'm not completely satisfied. Next time I'll spray, for sure. Be sure to try the stuff on a piece of glass first and wait a few minutes. Thin a little at a time to get the finish that you are looking for. THEN, start at the stern, where the sun don't shine until you get the timing down. We found that with me putting a THIN coat on with a foam roller, and my lovely bride following two steps behind (as it SHOULD be ;>) ) we could get t pretty good finish. Good luck and keep the pics coming!

Hiee guys,

Thanx for the kind words. I'm not totally happy with the results and I may have to do a bit more filler work but its turning out much better then what I had anticipated. There is simply no way to roller this on and have it look sprayed though. We're cruiser and not racers so I think it shall be quite all right in the end. After all it is a 26 year old boat and was in pretty bad shape when we got her. If I don't get her in the water and enjoy some sailing this season I'll be most annoyed with myself.

Actually I discovered that foam rollers were NOT the way for me to go. They left tiny bubbles in the finish after the first coat which this morning I spent a fair amount of time trying to remove most of. I then went and got myself some 1/4'' nap fuzzies which worked out very well. It has left a matte finish which I am happy with. 1 maybe 2 more coats to go :).

Bubbles in paint can also happen if you shake up your paint can instead of stirring it. Foam rollers are harder to use but cam give a smoother finish. Good luck.

Yeah buddy! Foam rollers suck! Nothing but bubbles! If you roll & tip it isn't a problem but still . . . talk about false advertising. Next time I spray.

Anyway, she's looking great! Nice job!

That is Sasha on the deck and she said the same thing lol. From all that I've read its all but impossible to roll with out getting orange peel. Even with tipping by brush. I tried it a bit yesterday,but it was quite warm and the paint skimmed so fast that I could only roll out a 2 foot width and then had to tip it off in order to make it work. With that there was to much of an issue of getting to heavy of a coat on. I find that if I roll out a 3 foot vertical width and then very gently start at the start edge and lightly bring the roller down to the waterline that and paint seams are removed as well as the majority of bubble, at least with the fuzzies. With the foamies nothing I did seemed to get rid of the bubbles. Like you say the only way to get a sprayed look is to actually spray it lol. BTW I'm finding that its taking me about 3/4 or a quart for each coat for this 22 footer. So 3 quarts will give me 4 coats total. I have a gallon of the white semi gloss I bought for the ext cabin and decks so it looks like I might have enough to do the inside as well :).

I might catch up to you! Got one coat all around yesterday and the second on the starboard side this morning.
Can't paint on the sunny side midday down here in FL! Besides the sun flashing the paint as it goes on, the paint is warm as the paint pan gets warm too and this must be evaporating the solvent.
Back at it in a couple of hours on the port side.

:) She's looking real good. I hope I will not have to do any bottom work for awhile lol what a bummer job that is. I have some work to do on fairing the nose of the keel box and then grinding the box itself and getting it ready for primer and paint and then there is a one foot section aft that I could not get to do to the cradle being in the way :eek: so it will have to be done when she is once again on the trailer.

Looking good there Brina!
What color are you using for a boot stripe? I'm thinking of a sand/tan kind of color. Something that will go with the colors on deck and stand out from the green of the hull.
My bottom was pretty bad with patches of barnacles, lose paint and old FG patches. Cleaned it up and the yard will repaint this week.
Next time I'll use that peel away stuff and get it down to bare hull but too much going on this time.

Boot stripe

I had orginally thought of going with a two tone silver/gold but have decided that I am getting tired of painting so instead I'll go with a simple platinum instead. There still seems like there is lots to do before we get her in the water but I am still hoping for July 1st.

PS our hull was a mess and I cleaned it up the best I could, Structurally it is fine but cosmetically it was a disaster.

I couldn't get the platinum :( so instead will use Seattle Gray which appears to be fairly close in colour. Not sure if we're gonna make the splash date now or not. 2 weeks away and still a fair bit to do.

Never spray epoxy paint. It is very toxic and will cause (at best) a permanent skin allergy to amine compounds... or it can kick your immune system into hyperfunk and you don't want that.

I'm a chemist (and the chemical hygiene officer at my work) so please do not spray epoxy.

You really have to have the right equipment to do that kind of work.

Roll and tip works well.

This was roll and tip.

I used one of the small 3" rollers and had my daughter follow behind me with the tip brush. I was able to do an entire side in about an hour.

Well, epoxy paint is sprayed in thousands of boat yards all over the country every day. The proper equipment is needed whether spraying or rolling. Chuck

Looks good!
I think everyone is talking about polyurethane paints, at least I was.
I've never understood why Pettit calls thier one part polyurethane "Easypoxy"?
