Would like to ask if anyone installed an automatic bilge pump in a Y25mkii before.
The space under the cabin sole that covers the bilge it's very small and shallow.
Any model of automatic bilge pump advised?

My request is due to a water problem (recurrent) in my bilge from the shaft, keeps leaking more than usual. So, with an automatic pump will prevent any further damages to the boat in time.

thank you for the input

A I've installed a"Rule-mate" 500 gph automatic bilge pump($AU100 in Australia) under the propeller shaft and in front of shaft packing box, connected through an in line fuse,1Amp,right to the battery, and the 3/4 hose to a Tee on output hose of the manual bilge pump.

B Change packing in the packing box or increase the pressure on the packing by tightening the two nuts(my bilge pump never had to work,I found the right pressure on the packing and everytime I am back at the mooring I put an extra 1/2 turn on each nut, making sure next time when leaving mooring to turn back the nuts 1/2 turn).

Good luck and good sailing

rule mate 500 gph is a small and useful item to keep in a dryish bilge-i have one inmy ericson, a dry boat--has an automatic cycle every 3 mins and is good ... is your packing intact and the stuffing box adjusted correctly??if not, that could be a good place to start--0will only grow more intense as time wears on and stuffing wears in.....

g5665,I was wrong,I installed the bilge pump in the second section of the bilge, towards inboard(plenty of room),with a bracket bolted on the wall which separates the two section of the bilge, and a 5 Amp fuse.

I've always been an advocate of manual capability over external power supplies when it comes to the serious stuff ( thats why we own sailboats right?).
While I have lots of electrical goodies on my boat I've always viewed them as luxury not necessity. The previous owner of my boat replaced the origional Cockpit pump with a Jabsco Amazon manual pump ( p/n 29270-000 universal) it requires you make a 1/4 spacer to fit up right ( made mine out of 7" pvc- Grey material in photo). Only takes 15 strokes (30 sec.) to clear the bilge , it holds more water than you think. #1 maintain your packings (furdui has the best practice if you can disipline yourself) remember not to overtighten the packing-it will damage your shaft.
Also along the same thought my boat has the optional hand crank for the YSM8 diesel.... it was this feature that sold me on manual override philosophy. While in a fogbank listening to the surf on the rocks with an engine that would not crank- being able to wind up the engine was a blessing. if you can find /make one do-it !
Sorry guys -didn't rotate the pics.

If not asking too much, is it possible to provide me with a picture of it installed?

I just bought one similar, just square in shape... and doesnt seem too much room available for it...

something similar to this one on the pic.

Thank you

I've also a question related to the packaging, which, for sure, it's all gone in my boat.
I hear it came in different sizes and shapes... which should be use for the Y25mkii ?
And, is it possible to replace it without removing the boat from water? In my marina someone told me we need to remove it from water in order to replace it...

Thank you

as you see,the trick is to get the pump under the shaft, its width should allow you to squeze it under without disconnecting the shaft,in my case i did not need any disconnection.
the packings comes in 1/4 inch(6.35mm),you cut 3 lengths of shaft circumference, less a gap of 1 mm(approx 1/16 inch???) and push them in the packing box with gaps positioned at 120 deg, first make sure you clean well the staffing box from old packings, using a sharp, home made, hook,do not worry about the water coming through,is not that much, the bilge pump,if installed, takes care of it,
from the pics my bilge(to my surprise)looks quite dirty,i promise to get in shipshape some time in the noy distant future!

Thank you for the pictures.
I decided to put mine in the middle section (the only part where i can make it fit, even if i've to disassemble it and assemble it after it passed the shaft. For the water pipe connection, decided to make the pipe run together with the original bilge and connect it, with a tee, in the battery compartment.
My pump it’s not automatic, needs to install a floating switch… which I will right after the pump. Let’s see if it works.

I thought on using it also. But found out my bilge pump is not working.
By the way, any insights on how to replace it?
Thank you

i've done some work on the boat today and i checked the automatic bilge pump and found that the pump is connected direct to the manual bilge pump hose, then it pushes the water through manual pump, and the manual pump sucks water from bilge through electric pump, there is a reduction in the water flow, the hose of electric pump is 3/4 and for manual pump is 1 inch.

I connected mine (which uses a floating switch, which i locate in the middle section of the bilge) in the manual bilge pipe also, but after the one way valve (which in my boat its located in the battery compartment). It uses the same pipe as the manual bilge (later i will install a one way valve also (i've it but forgot to install it) in the new pipe connection.
Later (after cleaning the mess in the area) will post some picture of the final results).
The removing of the water its working properly. I decided to leave some water in the bilge to prevent it to become completely dry

Out here in the wild west, we have flax packing impregnated with teflon. Put it in, tighten until you get no drips, and fuggedaboudit. I had my 30 for 17 years, and after replacing the wax-impregnated packing with the teflon stuff, had dry bilge. I did the replacement while the boat was in the water--you can replace the inboard two layers of flax with the same result.

Manual pump replacement

I don't know what the origional diameter of the Y25 pump was. The Jabsco diaphram diameter is the hole size you will need to cut. To fit the Jabsco pump housing you can use the blue retaining ring (check picture) to locate the fastner hole pattern. You will have to get longer screws (15mm?) to sandwich the housing (inside the boat) to the retaining (blue) ring on the outside. The spacer is used to apply sealing pressure to the pump diaphram. I used a quality silicone to seal the pump housing to the cockpit wall inside.
You can replace all the service components from topside. it will become more clear once you have the parts in your hand.
