Rui was the owner of Rooster Sails in Alameda Ca @ Grand Marina. Apparently he had fallen in the water trying to get from his dink to his boat. He was pulled from the water by a neighbor and was breathing and talking. Not sure what happened after that. He was taken to the hospital and died. He must have hit his head. I don't know. He was a good guy and always would say hello in passing.

Just saw the signs in the marina the other day. How sad, wonderful person and a great help with my sails over the years.

???...sad for certain, sounds like he would have been better off recovering at the dock rather then taken to the hospital

cold water

How cold is your water? Could it set off a heart attack? It's sad.
It's cold enough that if somebody had a weak heart it could have caused an attack. Rui had been quite a bit overweight, although I understood he'd lost a lot of weight recently, but maybe his having been overweight had put a strain on his heart.

Rui had health issues, among them diabetes, which he essentially left untreated for years. I know he had been taking better care of himself recently but I suspect that his accident was more than his heart could take, even though the water in the Estuary is not paricularly cold right now (mid-60s). He was a good guy and a good sailor and I will miss seeing him on his daily walks through the Alameda Marina.
